What the South Carolina Girl Said to
Edwin Arnold.
VuguRta Evening New*.
Augusta girls are in demand every¬
where, and the compliments are paid
them all over the world. By Augus¬
ta girls, we mean all in a half day’s
ride of the city, on both sides of the
river, and this will include many ideal
Southern girls. Augusta girls are
both gifted and handsome, and while
Miss Catherine Hammond, a charm¬
ing young lady of this community,
was summering up in New England
the past summer she was much ad¬
mired wherever she went. She paid
a visit to,Miss Longfellow, the daugh¬
ter of the great American poet, who
had been a friend of Miss Julia Ham¬
mond’s while she was studying in
New England. While in this culti¬
vated circle Miss Hammond met the
English poet Edwin Arnold, and
that great ppet-journalist in writing
of his American experiences to the
London Tekwaph recalled a

girl was among the company from
South Carolina. Her father’s estate
near the 8avannah river was in the
path of Sherman’s desolating march,
of which we spoke. I asked; ‘Have
you all forgiven and forgotten that
and the war down South ?’ ‘We have
forgiven,’ the Southern lady replied,

The Elixir of Life.
The Atlanta Journal reports that
Col. I. W. Avery, upon whom the
Rrown-Sequard elixir was tried some
time ago, is improving very much,
he thinks from the effect of the treat¬
ment.
Recently be has bad hundreds of
communications from all parts of
the country, and from very scientific
men, asking from his hands a detail¬
ed and accurate report of the experi¬
ment which he has for several days
been engaged upon and which will
ultimately be published.
Col. Avery feds confident of even
better results from tbe trial made
upon him and says that his balance
power is better than it has been for
many months which he attributes
wholly to the use of the elixir.

Fatal Affray at Meriwether County

Greenville, Nov. 19.—At a sup¬
per given at the late residence of
Newton Hood, near Jones mills, in
this county, Lutn Fuller tqok a little
too much tangle-leg, put on the war¬
paint and got into a quarrel with a
eolored damsel.
He got his gun down and threaten¬

Coonie Lewis, began expostulating
with him. Whereupon Lum emptied
the contents of his gUn intoCoonie’s
