The Electric Light Plant Progressing
a* Fast a* Possible.
W. A. Robinson, of the Thomson-
Houston Company, arrived in the city
yesterday afternoon and left last
night. He came down here to see
how the building was progressing
and whether any of the material had
arrived. He found that, tbe building
was completed with the exception of
thfe ceiling, which has been delayed
for the arrival of of better material
than was on hand. There are also
several coils of wire from Atlanta,
the balance coming from the works.
The plant has all been shipped,
although the delays in freight from
tbe different points may retard its
arrival for some time. The boiler
room will be built after the boilers
have been put up.
Mr. Robinson says that all the
plant ran be putu p in six days after
its arrival in Griffin. This time was
actually made in Brunswick, where a
larger plait was put in and more
territory covered.
The work of putting np a plant is
very systematic and rapid: (Separate
forces put up the poles abd the wires,
and then both these forces combine
in banging the lamps. While they are
doing this the machinery is put in
and started in the house, and the
lights are the ready to turn on at
once.
Our people are naturally impatient
to see better lights as.soon as possi¬
ble during the dark winter nights;
but there are thirty-seven days yet in
which to complete the work by the
specified time, and it will be seen that
res ample margin. Of course, a
delay in receiving the machinery can
neither be foreseen nor guarded
against; but Mr. Robinson assures
os that the city will be lighted at
the earliest moment possible, and be
has certainly given every evidence of
forwarding tbe work in tbe most ex¬
peditious manner.
A RECTORY
To Be BoUt w tke Dot East or 8t
Georg*’* Ctawk.
There lias been considerable
sion in a quiet way among tbe mem¬
bers and congregation of St. George's
church in regard to the bcukling erf a
rectory for the new rector and his
family. They only bare an option
on tbe Stapleton property on Poplar
street* not having fully consummated
tbe purchase; and it is frit by many
that it would be better to build a
new bouse outright.
A meeting was held at the;
yesterday afternoon for the
of discussing tbe question,

was evinced, fke only point cm

lot east of the
church, both because it would obvi¬
ate buying more real estate and be¬
cause it was considered the proper
place for It. P. G. Bailey and Mies
Opal Smith were appointed a com¬
mittee to get an expression from
every member of tbe church and con¬
gregation on tills point.
To the Sews and Sun ft seems emi¬
nently appropriate that the rectory
should be next to the church. This
is the custom, where practicable, not
only with the Episcopal but with all
other churches, and the convenience
and propriety of it are obvious.
There is ample roomln thiscase, and
the proper kind of building would add
greatly to the beauty of thegrounds.
It should, of course, be at least part¬
ly of stone similar to thechureh, and
can be made very pretty without
too great cost.
