Cotton IEu.it Hark.
A representative of the AViri
mid .lilrerliacr was out at llliin-
lioit or Hardaway station on Sat
urday last, and noticed several
mysterious looking harks on the
platform of F. F. Putney’s store.
We inquired what it was, and learn
ed that it was cotton root bark.
Mr. Putney , ad bought it of dif
ferent persons in the neighborhood,
and Imd'packed it iulo bales, ex
actly as cotton is packed, for ship
ment to lioslon, where it is used
in the manufacture of medicines.
Tlie roots of cotton plants are
straight and generally very smooth,
and can ho readily stripped-of
their bark. Mr. Putney informed
us that the hark was worth from
six to seven cents per pound. It
really seems that there ought to
he some money in cotton culture.
There is demand for the entire
plant and everything it produces.
The factories want the staple foi
thread and cloth, the oil mills want
the seed to make oil and seed meal,
the paper mills want tlie stalks and
limbs to mamdaeture into a line
grade of paper, and tlie patent
medicine mauiifaelurer want tlie
roots to convert into medicine.
