THE SEW SOUTH.
The advancement of the South
in the way of agricultural and man
ufacturing pursuits is fast attract-
ingtbo attention of Northern journ
als, and we hope will do the South
good. In a late issue of the Car-
linvlllc, (Ills.) Enquirer, one of the
leading newspapers of that State,
we find the following:
"No people ever made a nobler
struggle,to regain their former pres
tige than arc the people of the
South to day. The men of brains
and influence all know that' sla
very is abolished und that it can
never be restored—in truth they do
not want it restored. They do
want Nortncrn enterprise, and in*
dnstry and capital, they want men
of experience in agriculture and
business—men who have been
taught in tho school ol experience
ill the fertile fields of the North,
whore slave labor never existed
Such men can And grand opportu
nities in the South most anywhere
and can procure land cheaper than
in the West with a greater certain
ty of a crop. We are pleased to see
the following article in the Inst
issue of tiie Virdin Re/mrler anil
eordmlly indorse it.
" We have received several pack
ages of papers from Georgia which
are pleasant to read in the midst of
our snow squalls and slush. Even
the advertisements, which indicate
a new order of tilings or modern
life, are fresli witli tiie airs and
warm sunshine of a land highly fa
vored by nature. In them wo cun
trace the scent ol orange groves,
and the invigorating breath of the
Gulf, blown through the resinous
branches of the “Plney Woods.”
Here, for instance, oil the banks of
the “Suwanoc River,” immortalised
in melody, is a farm for sale in a
region where tomatoes are ready
to ship to the Northern market,
where peaches arc annual (and not
semi-oconsionul) in their luxuriant
richiless, where La Comte pears ri
val the fumed excellence of Cali
fornia fruit and all berries reach a
rare perfection as naturally and
surely as grass grows on our prai
rie slopes. Then, too, there ure
"flg trees, and ISO orange trees,
flewer yard of rare flowers, all nice
ly arranged," Ac.
"But seriously, has not the time
come when Horace Greeley’s fa
mous advice should lie changed for
awhile or at least supplemented
witli "Go South, Young Man !”
“Tho West is good enough and
for some persons and ior some line
ol business, would be preferred
There arc, however, many men and
many families of moderate means
who can not establish themselves
on our lands at 50 or 75 dollars un
aero, who could do better iiml lind
a more eongenial climate in Ala
bama, Georgia or Florida, on lands
that can now be had at from 1' to
SO dollars per acre—land which,
with as thorough work and culture
as we are used to here, would bring
in nsf prolltulile results. Neither
tho climate nor tho methods ol
farming necessary in the South,
would suit all of those who wisii to
seek now homes where land is
tdicap, but to some such, there can
bo no doubt, a Georgia farm would
prove a pleasant and profitable
home, who might meet financial
disaster and disappointment amidst-
the winter rigors of Nebraska or
Dakota.
“For the good, pf all concerned,
and of all sections of the country,
the trade of Northern emigration
ought to divide, aud a branch "Go
South.” There would be more
successful homes established, and
political fraternity would lie ce
mented by an inter clutnge of sen-
timent and blood. Wo are glad to
see the press and business public
of the South bending their ener
gies in the interest ot the .perma
nent settlement of their waste
lands, and Hie building up of uias-
iifacturing interests and solid pros
perity and good will."
The Gieenbackers have called a
national convention, to meet at St.
Louts on the 8tb of March.
The town of Ellavllle, Schley
county, has taken the first step to
wards advancement to city digni
ty. It has established hitching
posts and laid out sidewalks.
Gridin News: Griffin is soon to
have another telegraph line, on ac
count of the largo business done;
and it is also rumored that it is
soon to be made a billing ofllcc by
the express company for tiie same
reason. Griflln is a business place.
Neil Willingham, of the Albany
News, gives tbiB sage advice to the
inexperienced who may he con
templating matrimony: “Young
man after you are married you
may deceive your guileless wife for
a while, but her father’s wife nev
er."
The following statement of the
number ot firms burnt at Haver
bill, Mass, is very correct: One
hundred and eight shoe manufac
turers, twenty-six sole leather arms
fgbt- shoe trimming firms, eight
leather firms, two national banks l
one savings hunk, four machinists
three pattern makers, two leather
board firms, five hairdressers, four
eating saloons and some fifty oth
ers, making exactly two hundred
and eighty-two in all.

The United States Senate lias
