CIRCUIT RID150.
In company witli Mr - Geo. Sta
pleton, of this city, to whom we
are indebted for a pleasant ride
and genial company, on Tuesday
last we visited Preston, the capital
of Webster county, to nttend the
Spring term of the Superior Court
then in session at that place,.fudge
Willis presiding. On our Journey
thither we passed through some
flne country, and were gratified to
sec large fields of wheat, oats and
corn on every side, for it betokens
independence and prosperity for
onr farmers. We had heard of
rust in tlio wheat, imt saw few
patches where it was injured. The
corn looks especially fine, the stand
being the best fflr years, the color
healthy and growing line. In
some few fields the cotton was
just peeping through the ground.
Everywhere the farms showed

It is stated the port of lioston
alone during the Inst six months
over $100,000 has been collected
in duties at the rate of fifteen cents
on potatoes imported into this
country.
Here is a nice little name of a
paper for small hoys to shout:
“The Imternationalc Kosmopolitis-
ohc Poiyglotte Central Xeituug
von Wein,” which is about to be
issued in Vienna. This title is to
lie in languages and dilccts, and
(lie vender may take his choice.
Col. W. O. Tuggle, of LaGrangc.
is in Washington engineering an
old Creek Indian claim for some
$11.00,000. Tile Creek claimants are
“orphans,” and of course they will
get their money alter awhile. The
claim is in good hands, and what-
ever can lie done, Col. Tuggle can
do in that direction.
The Chinese bill does not inter
fere with the 110,000 Chinamen
now on the Pacific coast, nor with
any who may come within ninety
days from the date of its passage.
It is reported that those engaged
in the importation of Chinamen
expect to land at least 30,000 in
San Francisco before the ninety
days pass.
J. H. llavcrly, the gentleman
who aspired to furnish amusement
to the United States at large, seems
to he in an ambiguous position just
now. He is going to Europe, sonic
say, to get new- attractions, and lie
says himsclt, Imt quite another
side lias come up about it, that he
is a ruined man, and lias run his
day as n prominent theatrical mana
ger.
A lew days ago a Georgia politi-
eain went to Washington in search
of an ofllcc. Deceived by the
tiattering promises held out to
him, lie telegraphed home: “Things
are working; will be home in a few
days.” Not long afterward he
again telegraphed home. This
time the dispatch read as follows:
“Things have worked; send me
$25 to gel home.”
Somo intelligent Michigander
writes a moralizing letter from
Columbus, S. C.. to the Detroit
iW. His conclusion looks to “a
more perfect Union” in this way:
“Were it possible to retain the
enterprise and vim of our Western
civilization, and engraft upon the
root and stock the suave and
deferential social bearing of the
South, it would be a most desirable
achievement.”
I signs of industry and careful culti
vation.
Arriving at Preston, we found a
good attendance of people, and
among them many friends of the
Recorder, who gave substantial
evidence of their friendship by
enewing their subscriptions, and
depositing the requisite two dol
lars in the cditorinl hank. We
made many pleasant acquaintances
and received a cordial welcome
Irom the people of Webster, than
whom a more whole-souled, gener
ous and hospitable people we have
never found, while among them arc
muuy gentlemen of ability. Among
those we met for the first time nan
Mr. W. P. Jowers, more familiarly
known as “Pink,” the great cotton
grower, of whom wc had heard so
much. He said he never would
have taken us to he an editor, and
wc were able to return the compli
ment by telling him that in a
crowd .we should never have pick
ed him out as the enterprising and
energetic planter that lie is. Mr.
James Hell kindly took us in
charge at meal time and under his
hospitable roof wc spent the night,
lie is a gcntlcmnn of intelligence,
and ftom his conversation wc
gleamed ninny items of interest.
Among the cases Uicd at tliis
term ol'court was the Carter will
case, tlio jury returning a verdict
sustaining the will. No clue lias
been found ns to who set lire to
the jail lust week, although it is
thought by sonic tlmt the intention
was to burn up the negro confined
therein.
After spending a day and a half
very pleasantly and profitably in
Preston, wc went witli Mr. Staple-
ton down to his old home, in what
is known as the Gooseberry dis
trict, one ol the finest farming dis
tricts in Webster utility, where his
lather still resides, and witli whose
family we spent the night. We
here saw u sight tlmt wc had not
witnessed for some time—the sun
rise. An early start in the fresh
ness of tlio morning, a pleasant
ride through u line country, und
we were home again, a wiser and a
wealthier man for our journey into
Webster.

Marietta has also what the Jour
nal calls the “banner man,” who
has been married four times; lias
four sets of children; who never
bought a pound of meat or a bush
el of corn in his life; can get trust
ed any place; is sixty years nr
age and is lialc and hearty.
Both the Griflin and Miiledgc-1
vilie papers mentioned rather curi- j
ous deceptions to be practiced on j
grangers or good farmers. At,
Griffin a brag patch supposed to be j
wheat is heading out as rye; and at'
Milledgeville a fine field of what!
was planted for oats turns out to
be rye. The owners arc said to be
indignant, and the Milledgeville
man speaks of sueing the party
that sold him the seed. But isn’t
it curious that they couldn’t tell
the difference between wheat and
oats and rye before they planted
the seed Americus Recorder!.
Tlie seed was similar to oats. It
turns out that it isn’t rye, but a
bearded kind of oats, somewhat
like barley.—Milledgeville Recor

in a piece of new-ground, his plow

being, supposed to bave been an
Indian. The bones, {with the ex
ception of tlie thigh bones, were
complete and well preserved. The
excepted bones rapidly crumbled
after having been exposed to the
air.
