dence. After dinner Lord Freder
ick Cavendish and Mr. Thomas
Henry Burke, Undersecretary for
Ireland, went for a walk in Phoenix
Park. They were shot close to the
Chief Secretary^ lodge. No ar
rests have made.- 1

endish and Under Secretary Burke
were slabbed, and not shot. They
were both strolling in the park

a car drove up containing four men.
two of whom jumped down from
the car and attacked Lord Fred
eriek Cavendish and Mr. Burke,
stabbing them both several times
in the throat and breast. The
victims struggled hard for life, and
in the strng le became separated,
their bodies being found some ten
paces apart. The tragedy occurr
ed about ten minutes nfter’7 o’clock
in the evening, and in broad day
light. The bodies were first dis
covered by two young gentlemen
wbo were riding bicycles through
the park, and wbo immediately
gave the alarm to the Police Sur
geon, who soon reached, the spot,
but the police were already convey
ing Mr. Bufkp’s body away, to
town,'where au examination show-
id life to bo extinct. The upper
part of the body was perforated in
a shocking manner, and presented
a beastly sight. Proceeding further
the medical men reached the body
of Lord Frederiok Cavendish,
which.. .was being conveyed,
away from the park on a stret cher.

to Stephen’s Hospital, where they
will remain until an inquest Is held.
The locality of the outrage is terri
bly marked with blood. The spot
where the body of Lord Frederiok
Cavendish was found was absolute
ly deluged, while Burke’s body
lay in n pool of blood.
Great excitement prevails
throughout Dublin, and widespread
indignation is expressed over the

continue the search for Chip.

The general opinion is that Chip'
boat capsized in a trido, and that
nothing but tlie bodies, il anything,
will be found.
The recovery of DeLong’s pa
pers is considud extremely fortu
nate.
New Yobk, May 6,—The follow
ing is the last letter received from
DeLong. It gives the names of
men who were with him in tho boat
when it parted from tliejothers dur
ing the gale.
Every one of the fourteen per
sons named, witli the exception ol
Wlmlerman and Noros, who left
DeLong and went after succor per
ished with their brave commander,
and have now been found in their
icy shroud by Melville’s party at
