Prof. Van Kiper has just completed one

ject is our young friend, Jo. Davenport,
and tbe picture now graces the parlor of
his and Mr. Henry Collier’s room on

fourths size, and was taken with Mr. Dav

features being almost perfect. The Prof,
is to be congratulated on his success with
this crayon, as it will no doubt bring him
many orders for similar ones. We have
no hesitancy in saying tbut he is one of
beat crayon artist* in this state, os well as
being a fird-class photographer.

Tho Kra of Improved Machinery.
No better sign of brighter days could
be given than tho introduction of labor
om-1 saying and improved agricultural imple
ments, among onr farmers. In our im
mediate section wo are almost entirely
dependent upon f irming, and whatever
touches upon this interest, whether for
good or adver-ly,directly affects our trade.
The era of improved agricultural machin
ery is not a thing of the fnlurc, hill it is
here. Thcrefare already at least a jlnzun
first class seperators for grain in our
comity, and ns far from ongincs, they are
growing too common to excite notico.
Just at this timo attention is drawn to
grain cutting machinery. Nearly all tho
reapers and mowers that are off -red are
good, and among tho best is the Cham
pion. Several of the last mentioned have
been sold lately by Messrs. Il.irrold,

precision, and at the Paine time, one hand

all parts of tbe hills and hedges, and even
t ho spring birds appeared t ft join and cheer
them on to greater felioity with songs of

Then you should have Keen tlio crowd,

those tables with a vim that would have
done credit to the Light Baigndo at Bu-

old veteran. Col. Furlow, it could not bo
other than a glorious charge. But tho

It is a noted fact that the people of
Andersonvllle and vicinity never cherish
for a moment the Idea of failure. Success
seoms to crown their efforts in picnics as
well as in every undertaking.
Returning to tho ••city," we perceived
cmiHiderable progress within tho lost few
months. New streets have been mado,
old ones improved, shade trees set out,
sidewalks arranged, new stores erected,
aged ones remodeled, and a genoral stir
in business. Nearly every necommodu-

bakery, milliuory. etc. The business
houses bare become too numerous to

Only a (.'ouutry Boy.
Not long ago a party of gentlemen of
this city concluded to rent their weary
minds and limbs by going out for a little
fish, choosing one of the favorite resorts
of AmericiiKonianH for tbat purpose. Of
course they took along a deck of enrdsto
while nwny tho time while tin? fish were
propuring to bo caught. While engaged
in tho pleasure of a a*»*-ial game of seven
up a country boy, with tho usual qualifi
cations of short pantaloons und broad
hat, made his uppeurunco und asked to bo
initiated into the mysteries of tho game.
His request was willingly gran ted, and
before long tin? party was playing for |
small stakes, in order to make the game
more interenting. But, strange ns it may ,
seem, tin* verdant youth gradually accu- !
mulated the spare ca*!i of tha rest of th* 4
party. The city players 'norrowed from
their friends until there was nothing foil '
to borrow, and the country l>**y still j
raked it in. At last oil their money was
in the po*d, and after the hands were
dealt, it wns found thut siv jack’s were in
that deck, and country had four of them.
He claimed thut he hnd been imposed
upon, and insisted upon (tocketiug the
money, and when tho party rotumed
home it was found that there wns not
enough money in the crowd to pay the
bridge toll.
