JOLLY JOURFREEYILLE.
Joiinprkville, March 8.—March
is with us aud keeps us busy put
ting up fences, rolling logs and
picking up trash. Wo are greatly
in need of rain. Wo have not had
a good rain since last June. The
ground is getting too hard to plow
or for corn to come up. Many
think the early corn will have to be
planted over. The ground was too
dry with us to freezo deep enough
to damage tho corn. I examined
mine to-day and found it all O. K.
With a little rain and a few days of
warm sunshine all will be up.
There is but little guano being
hauled compared with past years.
Most everybody going to use it,
but not so much, as the crops are
so uncertain of late years. I am
going to uso ten thousand tons
but make it all but a few tons at
home, and I find it much better aud
cheaper than buying it.
No improvement in my wheat.
Am going to plant it in cotton,
pat under the wheat fifty bushels
cotton seed per acre, and will add
a hundred pounds of guano and iry
for a patch of fancy cotton.
Mr. 0. A. Kimbrough has fiuish
cd his oycione dodge. It is ton
feet square and ten feet deep and
covered over with post oak slabs
four mohes thick, and sceihs to be
perfectly safe. Prof. Grubs, of
Weston, also has bis about comple
ted. If you wish to sco either one
of them when the wind is blowing
or looks like rain you will find
them in the dodge.
Miss Orooke.lt Saville returned
from Dawson Sunday, but to tho
surprise ot her family had chang
ed her name from Saville to Bald
win. They left Dawson Sunday
morning about sun up, drove to
the parsonage, were married, came
up home, ate dinner with us and
loft for homo in the .evening. We
hope your future may always be as
bright and happy as now.
The Vfllo is now without any
young ladies. Come over girls, we
lmvo on hand several good bus
bands vet. All you will have to
do will be to propose.
Mrs. Mayot* returned last week
and the old man is lonely no more,
Mator.
Many beautiful and attraotlve
Indies are visiting Dawson. We
delight to see them come, and it is
complimentary to have thorn spend
their timo with us. Wc hope all
will unite In making time pass
pleasantly.
Three parties in town in one
night is no unusual occurrence. So
many young people here that one
dwelling is not sufficient to give
them promenading room.
The pubiio Friday evening ex
ercises at the College will bo in the
afternoon in place of night, much
to the regret cf the young people
of the town. They are said to be
quite entertaining. All arc cor
dially invited to be present.
Artesian water will soon gladden
the hearts of the patient Dawson-
ites. Never can it come in a more
needful timo. Hasten the day.
The roses soon will bloom, and
the sweet and bright college girls
will gather .them and the yellow
jessamine and crown themselves
“queens oi May.”

No less than three acres are being
planted within the city limits.
Messrs. Glover, Richter and Harri-
son are planting an acre each. Mr.
Subcr and others are also planting,
but in smaller quantities. It is
claimed that tills tree will fruit the
third year after planting and is free
from blight.

We hear that some Stewart coun

A pubiio school far oolored chil

on Monday, March Srd. Ilev.
Christopher Jordan, the Nestor of
this institution, proposes to per-
pcinate bis name by keeping up bis

An ordinance of the Town Conn*
oil requires all citizens between 16
and 60 to work the streets 15 days in
each year, or in lieu thereof pry in
to the Treasury 75 cents a day,
which is equivalent to a street tax
of $9.
This week's freeze has killed
many at the earlier vegetables that
were above the giound as well as
some flowers that were in bloom.
Pears are entertained for the safe
ty of the oat crop.
Quite a number of Stewart coun
ty farmers began planting corn this
ing a loaded gun. Mr. F. A. Bush
went on Dixon’s bond and pntbfm
on hts farm near Green Hill. This
week Dixon became troublesome
and Mr. Bash concluded that the
safest plan was to titrn him over
to the sheriff. On Thursday be
brought him to town add bad him
lodged in jail.
One day this week while Mr. Hill
and Mr. Corbett were putting up
some shelving at Corbett’s drug
store, a section of it fell to the floor
carrying Mr. Corbett with it. He
was struck upon tho head with one
of the shelves which cut a gash an
inch and a half long on the top of
his head. Ho does not regard the
wound as anything serious, but
greatly doplores the loss ot hair
sustained, as he had nono to spare.
A Railroad Commission.
N. Y. Financial Chronicle.
We have never contended that a
State Railroad Commission is alto
gether undesirable. On the con
trary wo have mantained that.if
conceived in a proper spirit the.
creation of snch a board might btfof
great pubiio benefit. With its
lunctiona chiefly advisory, and ad
ministered in n spirit of.fairness
and Justice, thyro oould be no doubt
that a commission might do much
good. That- there are abuses that
need correcting and evils that need
to be redressed has been only too
patent. But no restrictive ar pro
hibitive legislative ennetmen; yet
devised^ha? accomplished their re
moval. On the other band, the
banding over of the entire system
of railroads to a few officials, pos
sessed of despotio powers, could
only tend to aggravate matters.
Given a board, however, acting as
sort of mediator between conflict
ing interests—possessed of courso
of ample powers to make examina
tions and investigations—impar
tially oritioisingand reviewing testi
mony and evidence, and anxious to
arrive nt a correct conclusion, be
that in favor of one side or another
—witli such a board, sustained by
pubiio opinion, railroad managers
would bo sore to beed its sugges
tions and adopt Us rcccommenda-
tions. The wisdom of a policy of
this kind bad been illustrated with
exccilent results, in at least one
other state, and New York’s year
of cxporienco under it now must
now bo added as further confirming
its coi rcclncss.

At tbe lost term #f Stewart Su-

He drove every day in an open car

his stands either by the column of
the Place Vendoinc or the Placu

him a ease, from which - ho took
large portraits of himself and Med
als with descriptions of his pencils,
which be bung on cither side of
him. He then replaced bis round
bat with a magnificent burnished
helmet, mounted with brilliant
plumes. For his overcoat he don
ned a costly velvet tunic with gold
fringes. He tbon drown pair of
lolishcd steel gauntlets upon bis
mnds, covered bis breast with a
brilliant cuirass, and placed a rich
ly mounted sword at bis sido. His
sorvant then put on a velvet robe
and helmet, and struck up a tune on
an organ mounted in gold. To
tho crowds gathered around ho
then exclaimed: “I am Mnngta,
tbo great cbarlatau of France!
Yoars ago I hired a modest shop
in the Ilue Itivoli, but could not
sell pencils enough to pay my rent.
Now, attracted by my sweeping
crest, my waving plumes, uiV din
and glitter, I sell millions of pen
cils.” This was true. His pencils
were tbe very best.
Admiral Porter’s testimony on
tbe steel cruiser question is inters
estlng. Ho cited one case in
which over $200,000 were worse *
than wasted. Among the items
obarged for work on tbe Trenton
nt the navy yard was a hot house
tor ono of tho officials. Prominent
officers of tbe government have
known of these frauds for some
timo, and have taken no steps to
punish the guilty parties or check
the pilferers. Yet the Republican
