What Money Does.
Every one knows the advantages deriv
ed by paying cash for goods. It is with
mvrehunts ns it is with inaoy others—
credit or no goods. Thornton Wheatley
bays his goods for cath, thereby obtaiu-

st-inils to reasm that he o<tu sell you
goods from 10 t> 25 per coot cheaper
tban the merchants who pay orsdit

To Wheat and Oat Growers,
As the syoson for harvesting wheat and
oats Is near at hand, wo would suggest
that each grower of a speoial variety,
of a specially floe crop, send a peck or
half bushel of grain to Copt J. A. Cobb,
Exposition Commissioner, at Americas,
for exhibition at tie New Orleans Expo

with a statement as to the time of plant

of soil.

RAILROAD UEETIKO XH LUMPKIN.
From tho Lumpkin Independent wo
comUnso the following particulars of the
railroad meeting held in Lumpkin on
Wednesday of last week:
Dr. W. A. Gregory stated that the meet
ing was called for tho purpose of hearing
tho report of the committee who went to
Prtston last week in tho interest of the
proposed railroad from Americus to
Lumpkin, and called upon Hon. It. F.
Watts to make the nport. Mr. Watt*
stated briefly what the committee did in
Preston, binoe then the Americas peo
ple have found it advisable to make a com*
plete change of tactics and oomawitha
new proposition which is, that if tho peo
ple of Sumter, Webster and Stewart will
grade, tie and bridge a road from Vienna,
in Dooly connty to Americas, and from
Americus to Preston aud Lumpkin, that
the Central Railroad will equip and run
it. Mr. Watts was of the opiuton that it
was tbo best proposition that oonld be
mndo and urged its acceptance.
Col. Samuel U. Hawkins, of Americas,
being present was invited to address the
meeting. Mr. Hawkins explained the
situation of railroad matters in bis com
munity, and the efforts which ate being
made to secure a road running East and
West. Whilo bis people bad been very
anxious to build the road from Hawkins-
ville to Americua first, they had decided
to postpone work on that line for the
present and in otder to conform to the
wishes of the people of Stewart county to
concentrate on the speedy building of the
road from Americus to Lumpkin which is
considered ns of paramount importance
to all other enterprises. When bis com
mittee found the citizens of Webster
county divided, some being committed to
the 8mithville and Preston enterprise, it
became uecessary to barmouize matters in
Webster aud with this end in view the
Americas committee went to Savannah to
confer with Mr. RaouI, President of the
Central. Mr. llnoul strongly favors tbo
building of the road from Americus to
Preaton and thenee to Lumpkin and
agree* to iron and equip the road on the
most fuvorablo term*. It is thought that
the Webster county people can be induc
ed to accept the- proposed change from
Smithville In Americus which will insure
the speedy building of the road. Ou the
part of Sumter county Col. Hawkins
agreed that they would grade and tie the
road to Lannaunsseo creek, five or six
miles this side of the Sumter line. This
will lighten f ho burden on Webster, and
as it has two largo streams to bridge, will
need all the help they can get. lie sug
gested the immediate procuring of a char
ter and stated that Americus would soon
havo an engineer on the road making a
survey of the route.
Tho fa llowing resolution was intro
duced by B. F. Harrell, Esq., and un-
noituously adopted.
fU»olcc<l, By this meeting that the
counties of SumUr, Webster and Stewart
earnestly co-oporate in the bni'ding of a
railroAd from tho city of Americus to
Lumpkin and that we the citizens of
Stewart do hereby nominate and elect as
corporators of said road the following
named gentlemen from Stowart: J. M.
Scott, W. A. Gregory, J. B. L Ulmer and
J. K. Barn uni; and that tho other two
counties name tbe.ir corporators, to-wit:
Sumter five and Wobstor four, and tbnt
they, tho said corporators, meet at an
early day and organize for tbo purposoof
eleoting offioers, procuring the c Lai Ur
and securing the necessary subscriptions
for aaid road at the earliest day and in
their discretion, the roost practicable
way.
Siuce tbo railroad meeting on Wednes
day we have talked with quite a number
of citizens if the connty and in every
instance found them willing to take stock
ia the enterprise. They only wait for the
opening of tl/o subscription books.—

A Personal Explanation.
Mu. Editor—In Wednesday's Hepub-
iiaen of last week appeared a communica
tion signed “Citizen." In Friday's Rb-
cordru appeared an artiole over the non
4* plume "X" in reply. It baa ainco de
veloped that Major Spear, the author of
the former article, felt that the article of
“X" applied to him and *as intended aa
a personal affront.
In an interview witn Mr. Speer, I, as
the author of the obnoxious article, took
occasion to inform him that I made no
personal mention and intended no per-
•onal reflection, but that I only carried
out, as I understood it, tho plan of open
criticism previously developed by “Citl-
zsn." However much I may differ with
the Major on the propriety of hia article,
I certainly bear him no ill-will, and noth
ing was farther from-my intention tban
to inject a pet-tonal issue in what I con
sidered only a newspaper controvetsy.
Respectfully, H. O. Baolev.
