.1 Beautiful Challenge.
Because the Recorder, in tbe
kindness of its feelings and good
ness of heart, has seen lit to re-
[ publish several complimentary' no
tices given to Judge Kit Warren,
ol the Republican, upon the pale
intellectual cast of bis countenance,
the Judge has grown vain of his
beauty ami proposes to compare
countenances with our handsome
Solicitor General, Prof. Pilsbury.
While we appreciate the glory he
would win in coming off victorious
iu such a contest, we as fully ap.
predate the mortifying shock his
sensitive nature would receive on
being defeated, and believing that
.he stands no cdiance in such a con-
jtost even If he should select the
judges—we hmst decline the chai
euge, on purely humanitarian
grounds.

Smith took the lead almost from
the start and walked the first mile
in 114 minuets, followed closely by
all the others. Allen broke into a
trot soon after the first mile, taking
tlie leud and keeping ahead, follow
ed by Rylander and Smith. In the
first hour but verv little little run
ning was done by any but the three
leaders and Guerry.
There was no excitement to speak
of until the end of the second hour,
when Allen began to pile the miles
up in a manner to alarm the others.
He ran light and easy, with no ex
ertion. Rylander dogged him un
ceasingly until the third hour was
reached, wheu he dropped back.
It soon became evident that Allen
would win the race, with proper
care, by ti number uf miles, but
when he hud nearly reached bis
24th mile, at flve’minutes of seven,
four hours after the start, be was
suddenly seized with a oramp in
his stomach and went to his tent.
His trainer soon announced him
off, as he was unable to stir, so
great was the pain. It was caused
by partaking too freely of ice water
and lemonade, Ed. Stallings and
Wheeler weie off sometime before,
Wheeler’s feet being so badly
blistered he could not walk, Stal
lings being sick. As Allen went
off all eyes were turned to Rylander
and Smith, who were close together.
A hot race was being waged be
tween, but it soon became evident
that Smith would “get there.” He
