The Chicago Ilcialil lias iliscov-
Jered a number ol signs signilying
evil in corrcoliou with the nomina
tion of Blaine at Chicago. The
I nomination, observes tills supersti
tious organ, was made on Friday
1 and as it tills was not enough, at
, the very moment of the announce
ment of the vote the State shield
of Maine fell from its place.
Such a combi nation of evil omens
; the ancients would have considered
I too potential to have gone unnotic-
I ed and it would in all probability
i have cost a man simiiary situated
| to Blaine, hit well earned distine-
I tion and bonore. The Herald
1 further finds a parallel in Blaine’s
\ history and nomination to the politi
cal career of Henry Clay and draws
a strong parallelism between him
and “the Mill Boy ol the Slashes.”
Clay was tho Whig idol, just as
Blaine is the popular favorite ol 1
bis party to-day. Each sat in the
House, each rose to the position of
Speaker, was transferred to the
Senate and ultimately became See- j
rotary of State. Just as Blaine 1
was twice beaten iu convention,
although the favorite of his party,
so was Clay twice beaten lor the
nomination. The resemblance is
still further coutinued in the man
ner in which their nominations were ,
llnally made. The Whigs elected j
their president; he died in olticc
(Just as Qnrficld did) and the vice- 1
? resident succeeded (like Arthur). |
t was at that juncture that Clay
succeeded in getting the nomination 1
from bis party, as Blaine has done
to-day. The chances seemed alt |
in his favor. At first the Democrats ,
nominated a ticket that was sup
posed to be weak, and it was diffi
cult to persuade any one to take
the second place on It, but they :
succeeded in sweeping the country
and electing Polk, and Clay. like
Blam.-, went down to defeat.
