h n MUM Americus Recorder. W. L, OLBIIIBR, Editor. Metal Organ ©r Webste/ Ciittf; * The New York Herald is so con fident of the election of Cleveland that It Is figuring out r cabinet for hin.7 1 The Stvannah Tiroes says Mr. Sid. Lewis, late of the Macon Tele graph, has accepted an editorial position on the Albany News and Advertiser. We have seen no an nouncement of it, but hope it is trae, for we would like such a live ly neighbor. There seems to be no ground to hope that tho now capital will be built out ot Georgia material and by Georgians. This Is too bad. Alter all, the Gate City will hare to give up its claim to being the second Chicago, an Chicago meu will probably get Lbe coni roots lor the better items of the job. A gentleman in Birmingham, Ala., received, a few days ago, a letter written in Paris, from Stan ley, the great African explorer, in which lie said,‘'Alabama and Flor ida would .yearly receive many thousands of thrifty French and Italian immigrants were any cifort made to turn them thither." Voles, it is thought, will be Worth $15 each iu Ohio and India, na in the Presidential election. Twenty thousand floaters in each State at that price, together with what usually sticks to the hands of tlie soap committees, would knock the spots out of u million dollar Mil. Messrs. Klkins and Dudley may take due notice and govern themselves accordingly. Wo are not responsible for the following—it was handed in and the author beat a precipitate retreat before we could lie properly eillcd: According to Matther, St. John has a chance to make his mark. Tho enthusiasm for him at present is Lukewarm, though it will doubt less begin to Paul lieforc election, and perhaps Peter out altogether with the Ants or the voters in November. HOn'KLI, COBB. The editor of tbe Mllleclgcvllle Union and Recorder Is writing a scries of personal sketches about “jjfcnrgta’s i>ead Statesmen.” Tbe last ol these sketches is devoted to Howell Cobb, which we reproduce as being of local interest: It was the writer’s good fortune to have been born in the same town (Athens) Where tbe subject of this little sketch first drew tbe breath ol life. The first time we ever saw him wc had been chin- qnepin banting on Moor’s branch, in the northern suburbs of the town, and stopped at bis father's blacksmith shop where "Cobbham” now is. His father, a very large man, weighing 300 or more pounds, was sitting in front of the shop. Howell was talking to him on busi ness as we came up to get a drink of water. He was then a portly, fine looking young man, and if we arc not in error, was at that time Solicitor General of the Western Circuit to which Clnrk county was attached. Wc were tired uml hun gry, as boys arc after a Saturday's tramp. The generous man asked ns how manv chinqtiepins we had ? We told him shout 200. “Well”, says he “I'll buy them,” and he gave iis ten cents, the first money wc ever earned, and that is why we remember tbe occurence so well after so many years have passed. But, ns we started home lie gave us tho chinquepins back, ami said, “go up town and buy some cake, and be a good boy." ' Pending his campaign wilhChns. .1. McDonald, (or the office of Governor of Georgia, the writer ami Mr. S. Houghton, were «ditors of tho Federal Union in this city. Col. D. O'. Campbell was the prevl oils editor and made severe char ges against Mr. Cobb. Hut buy ing the paper in the middle of the campaign, and it was ml hot, we had to keep up the fire that Col. Campbell bad begun. The election for Mr. Oobti by an overwhelming majority made us; very blue. And when the Gover-j A . nor came to Millcdgcville, we were [ **“ ashamed to meet him, and dodged him ns well as we could Rut one day we cainc suddenly lace to lace with him on turning a corner. He slopped its and said, “young man, I’m glad to meet you. You have abused me in your pn|>er worse than n pick-pocket. I have held you iu my arms when yon wore a baby; 1 can forgive you because you are of tender years, but your associate, Bongliton, is old, and ought to have known better; I can’t forgive him." After that the Governor and ourself were as inti mate as any two political friends conld he. Gov. Cold) did not like the ofll ty-CiMTAT. PHIZR ,„ lm STILL LEADS!
