iS - i ~gig S 1 ON THE WAR PATH, i ^ u-yie speaking of romance and luMntv I have an authentic account of how/iotod Louisville bello first met her husband, which sound* more like fiction than matter of- fact. About Jhirtv-fire years ago tho landing of a steamboat carrying pasaencera was con sidered a social event of some impor tance not only liecauso this was the chief inode of travel where navigation made it posjible, out because the superb boats that then plied up and down the Mississippi were floating palaces and carried on board constantly the mos brilliant crowds of society people. The time spent on the water was passed in dancing, feasting and flirting, and on the occasion of which I am speaking an unusually gay and dis tinguished party wore on their way to St. Louis. The party included some of the most famous beaux of the dav, aud the bello of the trip was a wefl-knowii Louisville beauty. It seems thattbo Louisvillo girl reached her destination fancy free. For, os the boat drew up to the lauding and the crowd on shore surged down to the water’s edge to secure a glimpse of the new-comers, Miss , who wos loan ing over the guards, became absorbed in watching tho movements of a gentle man by tho gangway. Ho was tall and elegantly looking and strik- iugly handsome. Miss did not know his name, nor if he were benedict or bachelor, but conviction suddenly seized her, and, turning to a companion, she said impressively: “There (pointing out the gentlemau in question.) stands tho man whom I will marry.” In an incredibly short period of time she did marry him; but tho cream of the story lies in tho fact that he hod made a precisely similar romark in regard to her on first beholding the fair Louisviliiau os she stood, sur rounded by lier admirers, on the steamer. Military llncltnc In AiiutriM. [London Times, j A warm discimsiou is going on in Vienna newspapers in connection with the caso of an officer recently dismissed from tho army for refusing to fight a dnel. Two young men named Hintner and Mori, both lieutenants in the re serves, and both attending lecture in tho University of (drat/., met last Octo ber at a railway station. Mori made use of some offensive expression, which Hintner thought was intended for him self. Ho askod Mori if it was so, add- that if it wa 4, or if tho expression was repeated,, he would box his ears. Mori said it was intended for another person, and the incident ended. Four weeks lator Mori sent his sec onds to Hintner, calling on him for a written apology and withdrawal of tho words, otherwise challenging him to tight a duel. Hintnor refused to with draw his words; ho also “refused absolutely to light a duel, 1x cau.se it was against his religion, against, roasou and conscience, and also dueling was forbidden both by tho civil and the military law-.” .Hereupon tho matter was brought beforo a court of honor, consisting of superior officers of the fourteenth Army corps. The decision of this court was “approved” and pub lished on the Jan. 1’J, ami simply recites that “Josef Hintner, Lieutenant in the Reserve of tho Tyrolese Jagev regiment of tho Emperor Frauz-Josef” is charged with “absolute refusal of a duel, and tho sentence is that the accused bo deprived of his commission and rank.” This sentence, it appears, becomes forthwith oporativo.
