Now Orleani Kxpositlon, a meet- ing was held by the Exposition Commissioners in Atlanta a few days ago, when it was resolved to appeal to the patriotism of the peo ple of Georgia and raise by private subscription a sufficient sum to make a creditable State exhibit. In response to this call, a public meeting was called in Americus last Tuesday, at vrhioli meeting a committee was appointed to solioit subscriptions. The committee, in connection with Capt. Jno. A. Cobb, Commissioner for the die* trict, made a hurried canvass of the city, and at noon on Friday reported subscriptions amounting to over $300. They generally met with a willing and liberal response, and the sum will be still further increased by the 1st o( October. This action on the part of our peo ple shows that they are enterpris ing, patriotic and alive to the in terests of tiieir section. Americus having thus set the ball in motion, <ve hope to see its example followed by every town in the Third Congressional dis trict, so that our Commissioner can report a handsome sum at the mectiug of the Commissioners in Oetolicr. The time is short, and what is done should be done promptly. Now let the people of Oglethorpe, Montezuma, Marshall- ville, Fort Valley, Perry, Cochran, Hawkinsville, Eastman, McRea, Vienna, Ellaville, Preston, Lump kin and all other towns in the dis trict respond promptly to the call and send in their returns to Capt. Cobb. Let the Third district be the first to contributo its quota to this patriotic cull, and show their devotion to the interests of their section. Crpt Cobb, tho Commis sioner, is doing all in his power to sec that Georgia’s reputation shall not suffer in competition with oth er States at the great world's ex position, and bis oflorts should bo seconded by every County Com missioner in the district. We yesterday received the first number of tho Amkhicvs Daily 11b- eoBtizn. It is a daisy, and from its appealauce, it starts out with the assurance of success. The editor of the Hkcokdbji spoke skeptically of our enterprise in boginning the publication of the Daily Gazette. Wc were a little surprised to see that ho has followed our example so early. Wc are, however, from a month's experience with thn Daily Gazette, able to say that wc have succeeded beyond our expecta tions, and that wc lucl no uneasi ness about the enterprise sustain ing itself. The editor of the Re corder lias struck the correct note in changing his trl-Weekly to a daily. The wildest speculations ol Wall Street have not more varying* ol luck, hope, disappointment and sorrow than the seductive business of trading a "boss.” There is a peculiar fascination about it com mon to nothing else on earth. Shakespear evidently did not refer to horse trading when lie wrote: "It is better to endure tbu present ills than fly to those wc know not of." It is |oy unspeakable to im pose the "present Ills'’ ol your horse upon your neighbor, and tho average horse-trader will generally take tho risk on those lie "knows not ol," especially if there is some “boot" iu the matter. An incident well illustrating the subject occurred on our streets a tew day* since. A darkey acquaiu- tonce ofours, iu«l after making a trade, approached us with a grin. Wo inquired tho pause of bis hap piness. He replied: "Boss, you know dat old foundered, so’-footed mule oh mine, dat want no count fur nothin? Last Friday began the Jewish year 5645. Its opening is one of the most solemn festivals of the year in tho Jewish church. The The gradual settling down of the synagogues aro open, and tho set- price of cotton is making long vices upon tite occasion are always faces among our farmers. Oat sowing should soon be the order of the day. Good seed oats are plentiful and cheap. Don’t neglect it. Now is tite time to bring your butter, eggs and chickens to msr- ket, for these products are scarce and bring good prices. Early peas and potatoes have dono well in Southwest Georgia, but the later planted crops have been a partial failure. There are, however, exceptions to this rale, and the exceptions are the wise planters who have made cotton a surplus and raised their own supplies. The boomers of tbc immense corn erop have left oil booming somewhat. Tho crop of corn made in our section this year is good, but the tarmcr who soils a*, forty or fitty cents this winter wilt have cause to regret it. The day is called "Rosh Hoshamiah,’’ and is on the first and second days of the month Tishri. It is also called Yom Hazikoron, a day ot memorial and feasts of trumpets, ns a sacrifice instead of Isaac. It is s holy convocation on which no servile work is to ho done. From tlie first to the tenth are called Penitential days. In the service of the festival prayers of a three-fold nature are offered—of homage, of remem- brancu and of sounding the trum pet. These embody invocations that mankind may arrive at a true knowledge of the Creator, His beneficence, His omniscience, and His providence. Every tine Isra elite comprehends the observance ol the day with proper feelings, inherited from childhood. “And tho liOTd said unto Moses, saying: ‘Speak onto the children of Israel. Say in the seventh month, and on the first day of the month, shall ye have a Sabbath, a memorial of blowing of trumpets and holy con vocation, and ye shall do no ser vile work.’ ’’ Also in Numbers: “And in the seventh month and on the first day of the month shall ye have a rest, a day of memorial, of sounding the cornet, a holy convo cation; no servile work shall ye do; a day of blowing the cornet shall it be unto you, holy unto the Eter nal."
