Further, considering the candidates now contesting for the position, and diligently examining the merits of their candidacy, we recommend to the Republican voters, for their support, the Hon. W. D. The following letter to Tiie Mall, received through the post- office to-day explains itself: “Editor Daily Mail:—In rebuild ing the compress, would it not be practicable to erect something suitable to mark the spot where young Pickett fell, as an evidence ot the erttcem and admiration his Eufaula friends bore him? To Eufaula his death is a calam ity—a perfect gentleman, who was forced to give up his life under such unprecedentedly mournful circumstances in the zenith of his usefulness. “Many have expressed them selves as thinking it extremely be coming and appropriate that our people should signify their appre ciation lor such a character in some suitable manner. Marshall viler, Sept. 25. ’84. Col. J. X. Hudson-. Dear Sir.—A petition we under- stand has been sent you and Mr. Murray, signed by some of ourpeo- pie, requesting that you and Mur- ray have a joint discussion at this place. Our object in writing to you is to request tlmt you do not acquiesce in the petition for the fol lowing reasons: That this com- munity is composed of independent thinkers, who have made up their minds for or against yon, and will not be changed hy what either you or Murray might say. Again—as matters now stand the kindest feel- ing exists toward both candidates. There is no political difference, and if yon are elected Democratic sov ereignity will have spoken, and we bow in obedience to its fiat, and will cheerfully support you. A dis cussion might change this pleasant state of affairs. In a word, then, il nothing is to he gained for eith er of yon, why risk anything ? Wc have nothing at heart but the good of all parties, but you certainly handle an edged tool when you go into a discussion. Respectfully, Jail D. Fredrick, L. M. Felton, L. O. Niles, •I, 11. Cook, H.
