About September first we shall move into
our new store, at the old stand, Barlow Block,
Public Square, where we shall open the most
elegant assortment of goods in our line ever
brought to Southwest Georgia. At our pres

Sewing Machines, and everything else usually
kept in a Jewelry and Music Store, that must
be reduced to save moving and make room
for new goods. Therefore, for the next
Twenty Days, or until we move, will sell any
thing we have in stock at prices lower than
have ever been reached before
Come and examine our stock, get our

be convinced that we mean what we say
Remember we have great bargains to offer for
CASH and the time in which to secure them
is limited. Come one, come all, and don’t

They waste money on tho Eng-
ilsli navy, too, it appears. There
was H. M. S. Thunderer, a mag
nificent warship that has cost about
$2 509.000, including repairs, and
yet has done only about two years'
service -ince she was launched in
1812. On her t-ial trip she burst
n boiler and killed 40 or 50 of the
crew, and live years ago sbe met
with a second accident, bursting a
38 ton gun and killing and wound
ing several. These disasters have
stamped the Thunderer as an “un
lucky skip.’’ and with navigators
this means enough to keep tbe
powerful vessel idly rusting,
though she has no actual fault.
She lies in Malta harbor disman
tled, and money is constantly go
ing into new vessels.
William F.’whitCof Rookhill,
S. C., was in an unenviable predic
ament when he -was compelled to
insoitthc following advertisement
In the Herald of that place: “All
persons nre hereby requested to
take up Thomas Black, alias‘Star,’
a black, chunky negro, who bos
persuaded my daughter, Anna
Young White, to run otf with him.
I nm a poor white man, and hope
nil well disposed persons will help
me to recover my daughter and
punish the villain.’’ Thirty years
ugo anybody who ran oil with a
South Carolina black would have
been Jailed for slave stealing.
Swallows Firing Southward.
Chesteu, Conn., September 28
For the last two weeks thousands
of noisy bank swallows have con
gregated on the houses on the
summit i.f Hill street, and In such
vast numbers as to become a ser
ious nuisance. Where they came
from is not known, but it is sup
posed from tho clay banks of the
Connecticut river below Hartford.
Yesterday, at noon,they bunched
together in a black mass over the
village, and after whirling abont
for several minutes, they darted
away to the south, much to the re
lief ol everyone.

intending one of Mr. II. B. Marr's
plantations in this county, has
just gatii red 22 bushels of corn
per aero from u 25 acre field and
has already brought to market
thirty hales of cott:.n from a flvc-
mule farm. Ho expects to make
ten bales of cotton to the plow.
Tripp Taylor is a thorough going

The Mechanical rattan I’ieker.
Tho Charleston News and Cour
ier announces apparently by au
thority, that tho public will bare
to curb itaiinpalicuco in regard to
tbe Mason Cotton Harvester, as it
is not intended by the company
owning the invention to place any
of tho machines on tbe market du
ring tbe present season. A half
dozen machines have been con
structed of different sizes and
patterns, and tests and improve
ments are being constantly made.
It appears that the tests bIiow
that tho machines nre yet far from
perfect, and the wisdom of the
compauy in not attempting to put
any of them on tbe market this
year is, consequently fully vindi
cated. It is claimed that many
imperfections in construction have
been corrected, and that the pick
ing apparatus is now working so
satisfactory that 50 per cent, of
tho open cotton is gathered with
out injury to the plant or green
bolls in passing once over the
row, and by passing twice over the
row seven-eights ot the open cotton
is harvested.
Mr. Mason now proposes to con
struct double machines, so that
all the cotton will be gathered liy
once going over the row. He
claims that tho picking machinery
scarcely necdsany further improve
ment. Tbe trouble be encounters
is tho apparently minor one ofdia-
posing of tbe cotton after it is
picked, as the mochine persists in
throwing a good portion of it upon
the ground.
In accordance with a suggestion
ol Col. Morchead, President of tbe
National Planters’ Association, a
test will be made at some point in
8,oulh Carolina at an early day,
before a committee of tho associa
tion and other prominent geutlc-
men.
Tbo machine will probably not
be on exhibition at the New Or
leans Exposition. It Is announced
that if tbe test proves satisfactory
a construction company will bo
organized and preparations made
to have tho machine ready to as
sist in harvesting next year’s cot
ton erop.
It is asserted that every one who
has inspected tbo machino lias
been convinced ol its ultimate
Buccess. It la doubtful, however,
even if it should lie experimentally
successful, whether it will be soon
so perfected and simpliliud as to
stand tho lest of every-day work
in tlir cotton Held.
