The reason why the Bar

2d, They have a resident

DAWSON’S DADDIES.
Th.r OIt. Up h. W.ll—lam. Work
of tk. Krrur,.r—Tltn.ly Topic.
Dawson, Ga., Oat. 7—At
meetioj! of tbe city council last
Bight the subject of tbe artesian
well was discussed at some length
and with some warmth. Mr. Jack,
son made a statement, in whloh he
said he might or might not obtain
water where be wus now working,
but thought it would be as well or
better to''ruboutaod begin again”
in another place; whereupon the
council decided' that tbe whole
thing was an egregious failure, and
abandoned the project, at least for
tbo present, “and it may be for
years, and it may bo forover.” Mr.
Jackson and his staff were dis
charged, the engine ordered to be
restored to its proper owner; and
whether the derrick, ete., shall be
removed and ail signs of tbe enor*
mons mistake be erased and for
ever obliterated from tbe face of
tbe eartb, or whether it shall stand
as a monument to the greatness of
our present Mayor and city coun
oil, will be determined at the next
meeting, a month hence. In the
meantimo the clerk is ordered to
assess a tax of one per cent, on all
property inside the city limit, and
proceel at once to collect the same
and place it in the hands of the
Treasurer, who will proceod to pay
the expenses of this huge project,
and other indebtedness ofthe city.
The counoil also passed an order
to open College Avenue to tbe in
corporate limit, and there Intersect
with tbe new road opened by the
county, passing near tbe residence
of Capt. J. W. Itoberts, and into
the Dawson and Brooksvltle road.
This will bo of considerable con
venience, and saving time and dis
tance to those going in, and going
from, that direction,and especially
to those going to the depot, tbe
Baptist church or either of the
schools from that portion of the
eounty. This project was first ag
itated and recommendod in the
Recukdeb by your former Dawson
correspondent, “ W. K. P,’’ and to
him we are mostly indebted for its
final consumation.
