On Ibe Philadelphia Plan,
[New York Sun.]
There are a great many young im* in
New York who manage to live well, en
joy frequent excursions, and*keep well
in the amusement swing bv conducting i
all of their entertainments‘on what* is i
commonly known an tho Philadelphia !
plan. They aro well dressed, good-
natured, ana jolly-looking meu who aiv I
seen together in a box at tho theatre, j
dining at a good restaurant, going to the ‘
races on a coach, or running off for two !
or three days’ fishing ou a yacht. Their
bills are paid unobtrusively and quietly, {
but when the crowd js alone, a prompt •
settlement Is had, and each man pa vs
his own share. /••■*:
Wheu a number of men “whack up” ■
for a. diunor it reduces tjio cost very !
much. ■ They can Mt a much better din- '
uev. have more wine and a great*.r variety
than when dining alone, and for less j
money. As a rule, the young men who
go about town habitually aro not over-;
burdened with funds, and if any t ue ot
them attempted to entertain ah .his i
friends ho would find it a serious drain !
on his purse; -That is why 4 jhe Phila- ;
dolphin plan is resorted to. During the {
races at Jerome park the hotel coaches I
arc continually employed by crowds ot !
nieu who go on this principle. The 1
coaches have moveable seats which can •
bo arranged on top so that they look j
like veritable coaching-club drags, J
and when drawn by four spanking bhys
thoy make ouitc a presentable ap
pearance. With a crowd of ten, or
fifteen men abroad, such a coach
usually forms a very lively sort of jim
cession. The young meu usually chip
in from £:J to $10 a piece and make the
solid sum with which they buy a horse
for a winner and a horse for a pined in
every raCe. This keeps them interested
all through the day. and when they!go
home they divide the winnings—if there
are any.
In tho same way they arrange yachting
trips and excursions to the country. \ It
may not be a particularly aristocratic
mode of procedure, but it certainly is
much fairor to all concerned than the
indiscriminate habit of treating, fby
whieh tho poorest man in the crowd is
usually impoverished—through the j^o-
verbial generosity of poor men—and the
mean man lias no end end of fun with
out paying for it.
