A Judge at Leisure,
* {Adirondack* Letter.]
In tbs tonic atmosphere of the noun
tolns si ortsnten from the city can tramp
ten and even twenty mile* a day witn no
more fatigue than lollows a walk of 8ve
miles at home. I returned to camp one
altemoon after eto'. en miles of hard go
ing through tho woods, and then started
oil with a guide to a secluded lake seven
miles distant to hunt for deer. Arrived
at the lake after dark, we kindled a
firo in the woods and rested an hour,
after which wo paddled around the
lake, with a lantern burning in the how
of the boat. Wo heard two or tlrreo
deer tack in the thicket, but as yet none
were in the water. We returned to
camp and do;ed over tho flro until mid
night, and then went out again to try
our fortune with little hone of success,
for the de^r had leen hunted only two
nights before and were likely to be wild.
Two left tho water, snorting and whist
ling, when we were still far from them.
Just teloro we finished making tire
circuit of the lake, I saw a deer near ‘.tie
rigi.t hand sl.oro. It walked slowly to
ward the shore, and then pro u into a
run and got upon tue bank. The guide
turned the boat silently, so that the rays
of the jack fell wh.ro tho frightened
game stood, snapping the twigs under,
iris feet by nervous stamping. Now it
would bend its bend dou n mid stare at
tho light, ami then raise it and ro-
new its stamping. 1 tried to get
sight on it, but the light had
been placed too straight ahead in the
boat. Two or three times tho deer
started and ran a dozen feet and then
stopped. It was evidently gett.ng un
easy, and I decided to accept whatever
shot I could get. Soon i sarv its form
faintly, just as tho light fell on the
sights of my rifle. I took the chance.
An indistinct sound on tbe shore fol
lowed the report of the gun. Tbe beat
was stnt ashore, and there in tho
bushes, stone dead, lay tbe pre.trest
dei r I ever saw. It was a 2-year-old
doe, fat and round, nnd with n shapely
head. Its eyes, over which tbe lids
and scarcely dropped, were soft and
expressive. In beauty tills slain doe
surpassed any buck waich has yet come
in my way. Did I feel remorse over
having killed the beautiful creature
Notone pang. -My on'y (motion Was
admiration of its symmetry and won
derful eyes. It is lure tliat a deer is
killed instantly. Tnc gu de said ho had
seen only two that were robbed of i.fe
in a moment. My bullet passed in a
straight 1 ne through both shoulders.
It was a chance shot, and yet tbe best
that could huvo been made.
Now and then in the woods yon meet
an o’.d time trapper. Tho low price of
furs has destroyed the business of these
old characters, but they still live in tbe
forests, preferring tbe companionship of
the deer, tho for and the bear to tnat
of their fellow-man. A trapper named
Seymour, a black-bearded, round-shoul
deled man, camo to our camp nnd ro
mained a few days. After relating
stories of Us queer life ono evening, hi
said: “Wall, 1 guess I’ll bo getting
Tong to-morrer to sco what I can see.'
Wo asked him where he wn.i going. He
did not know. How long world
lie stay away? He couldn't te.l. When
wo awoke tho next morning ho was
gone. Our guides said ho would spend
weeks alone in tho woods, sleeping un
der his boat at night or in sorao old lark
shanty. Perhaps during his stay there
tie wouldn't see a human face, or once
hear articulale speech. lie would loaf,
watch the different animals, and pick
up a living with fish-lino and gun. He
is never at case unless his a’ ode is os
solitary ns that of tho Uttern. In a
shanty on Salmon lake, many miles
from any habitation of man, dwells an
other of these hermits of tho woods,
called "Old Lewis.” He fishes, sheets
and taps maple sugar from the trees.
Surely come men hare strange tastes.
In n log cabin on a certain lake—what
lake 1 dare not tell—lives every summer
a man who, ?s he presented himself be
fore me, was as queer-looking ns any
trapper. Indeed, his appearance was
far more disreputable than that of
cither Seymour or “Old Lewis.” He
wore an old soft hat pulled down over
his eves, n l rince Albert coat which
looked ns though it had seenn very hard
winter, black peg-top trousers, and a
pair of eye-glasses. His face was sun
burned, wlib.li gave him a sottish ap
pearance. I should add that his trousers
were in a sad state of disintegration,
and could lo worn nowhere, except in
tbe woods, without giving birtu to a
scandal. This was not a woodsman,
however, but a distinguished judge of
tho supreme court of the great slate ot
New York, escape,! to the forest to get
free of the artificial restraints whi.h
civilised life puts upon him. His wife won
with him. She hud her own rifle, and
handled it like a sharp shooter,

Sugar cone grows during about five

feet, counting tho white joints nnd the

four feet high, so that from then until
Sept. 15 it grows ninety-six inches.
During August, however, it reaches the
largest rate of increase, the ordinary
growth during the momh under favor

August is known as tho “growing
