Thursday night t!w Mechanic’s,
with tho assistance of Wide
Awake company, and a number of
invited friends, christened their
new reel, tho C. F. Crisp. We
state this as a fact, because some
of the boys are liable to have for
gotten that part of the programme.
In the afternoon the reel was
placed in Wide Awake engine room,
tables erected on the sides, and
wine tables put ill the hall above.
A smalt place Was left between the
rostrum of tho hall and the numer
ous, rows of chairs in the room,
where the speakers responded to
the toasts. In the center of the
space a marble wine tabic was
placed, on which was placed the
sparkling liquid.
At 8 o’clock the companies and
the guests had assembled, and the
following programme was an
nounced—
PROGRAMME:
Introduction of Hon. C# F. Urisp
by Foreman Watts.
Christening of reel.
TOASTS.
To the Lady Honorary Members
of Mechanics Fire Company, by
Col. N. A. Smith.
To the Americas Fire Depart
ment, by Chief J. J. Smith.
To Mechanics Fire Company, by
Ex-Chief W. I*. Hurt.
To Wide Awake Fire Company
by Assistant Foreman L, J, Bla
lock.
Mr. Crisp's remarks when he
broke the champaguc over the
beautiful racer were few and ap
propriate. Immediately thereaf
ter those present adjourned up
stairs, where the wine was handed
around and tlifc toasts began.
Col. X. A. Smith, in responding
to the toast of “The Lady Hon
orary Members,” paid a beautiful
and glowing tribute to woman;
told how r the ladies had so nobly
assisted and stood up lor the de
partment when the occasion de
manded it. He was frequently' in
terrupted by storms of applause.
Chief J. J. Smith responded to
the toast, “To the Americus Fire
Department,” and although he said
he was no speaker and was not
prepared for the occasion, he was
heartily applauded at its couclu-

Fx-Chief VV. I*. Burl then re
sponded to Ihe sentiment, “To
Mechanic Fire Company,” telling
of its organization and infancy,
and its heroic struggles against
adversity, lie was inlemrpud
several times by applause.
Assistant Foreman Blalock then
drank to the health of “The Wide
Awake Fire Company,” and spoke
of the friendly feeling existing be
tween the two companies, which
lm hoped would always exist, a
sentiment that was echoed by all
present.
At the conclusion of Mr. Bla
lock’s remarks Dr. Burt arose and
called the attention of the house,
saying he had been requested to
read a telegram, giving the latest
election news. He then read the
IlKCoiiiiKii’ri speoial from Mr. II. W.
Grady. A pin could have been
heard,had it dropped,as he paused
before reading the second sentence,
and when his strong and emphatic
voice had uttered the last word of
that sentence, a cheer went up
from a hundred throats that seemed
seemed almost to lift the roof. The
dispatch seemed to remove the last
doubt as to Cleveland’s election,
and the firemen were wild with en
thusiasm.
Judge Crisp was carried to a
chair, and made to voice the senti
ment of the crowd. Ilis words
burned with hope, certainty and
thankfulness, and made all hearts
light and glad.
The boys were started, and they
must paint the town. Tab Oliver s
anvils were dragged forth and made
to ring with the jovous news. A
bonfire was started, and hundreds
crowded around it, dancing, shout
ing and acting like mail. It was a
night never to be forgotten.
And so the new reel was christ
ened. The boys had been figuring
all along to have the cbrUteniug
occnr after Crisp’s election, iu or
der that the jollification over that
event, if ol none other, might occur
that night. The reel is a beauty,
and we hope it may Always “gik
