Amekous Recorder. W. V. OLBIMKB. Editor. Offlclal Organ of Webster Cotintj. TUESDAY, SOT. II. 1884. TO COLOMBO MBS/ On Sunday tbe Kzcobdeb as ■ored (be colored people tbit they bad nothing to Tear from tbe sue. ceil of the Democratic party at tbe lato election; that there was no intention to disturb tbe present friendly relations existing between black and white, nor any desire to take away from tbe colored people any of tbe rights they now enjoy under tbe law. The assurance given by tbe Re- corseb is this morning sustained by a written pledge signed by a majority of the prominent white citfsens of this city. This should assure tbe colored people that they have ao reason to fear that their rights will in any way be interfered with, aod that they can go on peace fully about their business as in the past. To make assurance doubly sure, the two most prominent members of tbe Republican party in this county through our columns this morning assure their colored friends that the elec, ion of Cleve land {annot change theiccon.iition, nor do they believe that there are any who desire that it should be changed. Tb$y give the colored men good advice, and it should be heeded. These assurances would not have been necessary had not the fears of the colored people been arouse' 1 years ago by political demagogues, who in order to control their votes told] them that if the Democrats ever got in power the colored peo ple would be put back in slavery. Believing this, as most of them did, it was little wonder that the elec tion of Cleveland threw them into consternation. In their fears they forgot that it was the Democrats of the South who gave them equal school privileges and protected them in every legal right. It is to assure them that their relations will not be disturbed, and to pre serve peace and harmony that these assurances arc given. As one who has carefully noted tbo treatment of the colored peo ple in the North and South, we wish to Bay to them that the co’. ored people lmvo no better friends than the whilo people of the South, with whom they have been raised As tbe Republican papers ana lyse tbe result of the election in New York State the work of the Independent Republicans becomes plainly apparent. The Second ward of Brooklyn, which has here tolore been good for a Republican majoiity of 500 or COO, gave Cleve land Tuesday a majority of 498, This is Ilcnry Ward Beecher’s ward. Oueida county, in which ex-Senator Conkling resides, gave Garfield a majority of 1,946. On Tuesday it gave Cleveland a ma jority of 19. Itappears, therefore, tiiat Beecher and Conkling may not have performed a very insig nificant part in defeating the plumed knight. We are more than pleased to see that our friend, Gen. J. C. Black, oi Danville, III—whom the Geor gia delegation at the Chicago con vention named for the second place on the national ticket—lias been elected to Congress over Joe Cannon, who has held the position for tbo past twelve yeais. Gen. Black will make an able and indus trious representative, and it does our heart good to think that our friends in Illinois will be so hand somely represented in the House. It is un derstood that tbe bargain between him and Mr. Blaine included not only the withdrawal of tbe suits against the Pacific Railroads for the hundred million dollars owing by them to the government, but the promise to use tbe whole pow er and patronage of the Executive to snddle upon tbe government tbe Western Union telegraph at its inOatei stock valuation of $80,000,- 000. OLD ESTABLISHED MERCANTILE HOUSES, WHOSE SOLVENCY WAS SUPPOSED TO BE FOUNDED ON INDE8TRUCTABLE ROCKS OF UNLIMITED CAPATAL AND UNQUESTIONABLE CREDIT, Tottered and Fell in a Day! Specinlly was this true of many large and celebrated Clothing manufacturers who had made up numerous stocks from materi als bought <ui credit. These manufacturers placed their faith on lively and profitable September trade, absolutely relying on it for funds to meet their maturing paper, which they had given for piece goods, but the trade did not come, the continuous warm weather and no customers cooked their “goose,” and there was nothing left for them to do but to fail and turn their goods over to an Assignee. It was bad for them, but it is in your power to make it good for you, for, as usual, when good goods are to be sacrificed we are always on hand. Our Mr. Joe Waxclbaum was tlipre, and notwithstanding the fact that we were already prepared with a stock of Seventy-Five Thousand Dollars, we bought Thirty-Three Thousand more in fiovs. Chil drens and Men’s Clothing, Dry Goods, Dress Goods, Fancy Goods.
