Dur ing the evening session, when the returns trom the that district ol the first ward of Lung island Ci y were presented, Counsellor Jesse Johnson, representing the republi can .'ate committee, questione- 1 their validity, claiming that they were nut sinned by the property qu.iiii.d inspectors, lie said he had Iu en told that William llenry, chairman of the hoard of inspec tors, had lelt the polling places, had revived no ballots, aud has wore person had lakcn his place and signed the returns without being duly quali fied. TUE NEW YORK CITY VOTE. In New York city today, at noon, the board of aldermen were sworn in tea board of county can Francis M. ScQtt.. Francis L. S’et S’n, Edward R. Bicon and Janes C. Carter. A resolution was of fered that none except (hose hav ing business with the board should be allowed to remain in the room during its sessions. This was laid on the table. Tho requisite com missioncr* were appointed on pro tests, the supervising of returns, etc. William P. Kirk ( Tammany) read a protest against any votes being counted that were cast for William ll. Grace for mayor, o.i the ground that it had been puh- Holy and aemi-oflicially asserted and believed by many people that Grace was not a naturalized citi zen. This matter was re'erred to the committee on protest. The board then adjourned until to morrow. , Up to this time no objection had been offered to the interference ol mttside parlies; but at this point. Supervisor McLaughlin suggested llmt tho oljicliun ol counsel were interfering with the work of the hoard tin I moved that the canvaan proceed. Thisioirse Wts adopt d und no fiilher notice was taken ol Johnson's objection. Johnson also claimed that the note of the town of Newtown was in excess of the registry, but upon an inspection ol Hie registry books he discovered that it was several hundred less, it is now almost certain there will be no change in the figures as al- ready published showing Cleve land's plurality to be 1.220. TUE KINGS COUNTY VOTE. The Kings county hoard can vassers met to-day. A number of citizens were present, ns were also coun-el representing tbc republican and democratic national and State cmnmit'ces. John Y. McKre was elected cha'rinan, and the usual committees were appointed, after which the boaid went to work on the canwusa. Thu hoard of canvassers of Su'- folk county, also got to work to day. Lawyers urc present repres enting both the Ilepubliunu nnd demnuralic parly. changes in Cleveland's favor understood that no Information has I ecu received at the demoofatln committee loom which in not in accordance with Mr. McPherson’s tabic. Al this hour 9:30 p. w., reports from the county tmaids ot thirty counties of Nciv York slate, nor’h of Harlem river, make changes in ibe figures published in the New York Timis ami the Sun, the net result ol which is to diminish Blaine’s plurality, as given in bo<h papers. Taking tho Times’ tables as published Sunday, as a busie, the net loss to Blaine is 54. AII of the changes noted in these re ports are in counties which gave majorities for Blaine. No change lies thus far been made iu the pub lished minorities for Cleveland. The following are the counties em braced in the above statement. Allegheny, Cayuguo, Chautauqua, Clinton, Essex, Livingston, Fulton, Hamilton, Herkimer, Lewis, Mndi. son, Montgoinciy, Onandago, O'- leans, Oswego, Otsego, Putnam, Raneasnelcr, Rockland, Saratoga, Schenectady, Schoharie, Seneca, Siueben, Tioga, Warren, Wn-liing ton, Wavne, West, Chester, Wyom ing and Yates. t:ie times figures sustained. The reports at 10:3 J p. m. from additional New Yoik counties ol Richmond, Orange and Catinran- gus, make no change in tho Times list, but a correction received Irom Lewis county, in which a change ot fifty-two In the published plural ity was previously noted, makes a change of only two voles, so lii.it the changes of tin* thirty-three coun ties show a nut reduction of lilaine'a pluriilUy, as published in the Sunday Times, of four votes. As They Adjourned. From th« A:ehJ«oa Glob*. Old Sol Miller, editor of Troy (Kansan) Chief, and whohasa wide reputation as tho possessor ol a pen dipped in red hot gall, but withal a little wicked and a good d al irr -verent, was recently nom inated for the Kansas Senate by the Republicans. The religious element held a meeting and indig. "ally d'tc-mined not to support hi n. The crowd was large, unan imous nnd enthusiastic. They ap pointed a committee, so the story goes, to wait on old 8o!,and notify him that lie must withdraw or they would bust him. The committee found the old man in his sanctum, and proceeded to unlnid their mis sion. When the spokesman bad finished, and the others ol the com mittee hid endorse I his remarks, the old gray headed editoi str Igh'cned to his full height, pnlnu-d a long bony finger at the committee, while a strange glitter came into his eyes, and lie spoke in low, freezing tones: ■For thirty years I hare published a paper in this town. Not a week has passed in all that time but some truly good Christian man bu been to me and begged that some thing to his discredit should be withheld from publication, 1 have .1 ways complied. But the articles, though not printed, were always written an filed away. I'm a methodical man. 1 have more than one thousand articles within reach of my hand, embodying every dis reputable scrape and adventure that the “best and religious element” in this community has been engag ed in for the last thirty years. And I just want to say that If I am beaten at the polls 1 will start a daily piper tho next day, and I will never stop until 1 have printed every one ol those stories. That is my answer.” The committee crept quietly out and returned to i lie meeting to make their report. V silence like that of death fell upon the assembly, Mil the purring ol a cat upon the pulpit cushion sounded like the filing of a circular -aw. Fur ten minutes no one spoke, when at last the sexton said: “I move wo adjourn.” It was car ried unanimously. And thus mis erably perished a promising inde pendent movement.
