Wednesday night was the night
set apart to paint the town, and
from the present indications the
boys succeeded unusually well
Wednesday was a remarkably
busy day. In the morning the
two cannon, from Albany arrived
and were turned over to Col. A. S.
Cutts, who, with Mr. B. P. Hollis
bad charge of them. During the
evening they were mantled by
squads of Col. Cutts’ old artillery
company, under Messrs. M. B.
Council and T. S. Greene, and
right well did the bo.ys do the
work.
At seven o’eiouk the band, in
Prince’s line band wagon, which
was gaily illuminated, drove up to
the council chatnbor, where the
firo companies nnd torch bearers
were congregating. In a half an
hour the procession had been
formed, under direction of Chief
Smith, the band started up and the
boys begah to move. As they
turned the corner and filled the
street down the hill it looked like
a stream of fire, surging and roll
ing from side to side.
THE PROCESSION.
The following was the order ob
served in tile procession :
The Band in wagon.
Chief Smith and Staff.
Wide Awake Kirc Co. No. 1.

From the council chamber the
line of march was down Lee to
Church, up Church to Hampton,
up Hampton to Lamar, up Lamar
to Cotton Avenue, down tho Ave
nue to Forsyth, up Forsyth to the
Opera House. Nearly every resi
dence on the line of march was
beautifully illtiminaied, and the
scene was one never to be forgot
ten.
THE SPEAKING.
As the procession came tip to
tho Opera House the cannon open
cd up with n salute of twelve guns.
Tito crowd swelled and grew
around tho opera steps, and when
the noise had somewhat subsided
Col. C. II. Wooten arose nnd in
troduced the orator of the ovening,
one ol the backbones of the solid
Democracy of tho South, the lion.
Patrick Walsh, of Augusta, who
made an eloquent nnd stirring
address, which was responded to
with cheers and the wildest enthu
siasm. lie was met by hearty
greetings, nnd the people would
like to sco him more lrcqucntly.
Judges Crisp and Hawkins fol
lowed in brief remarks, and Hons.
Hudson, Hinton, Hinkle, Woolcu,
Kdgar F. Hinton and L. F.
McCoy.
THE FIREWORKS.
As soon as the first speaker had
finished, the pyrotechnic display
began, continuing nearly two
hours. The committee in charge
of the display wero allotted tho
base of the Perry House hill for
their ground by tho city author!
ties, and were compelled to send
their rockets nnd caudles up in
certain directions, giving rather a
sameness to it before it was over.
Tho display was a good one, some
of the rockets being especially
brilliant. The white and colored
lights ignited by Dr. Green were
noteworthy.
THE SPECTATORS.
A.1I day long farmers and their
families came in to remain over for
the demonstration, and when the
city people turned out in the
evening the streets were lined
on ail sides. It would he
impossible to designate or guess
at the number in attendance, but
it was unusually large ami orderly.
The best of order and good humor
prevailed, and though the accom
modations were not as good as
might have been, everybody ap
peared contented. After tbc dis
play huge bonfires were built that
lit up the square, and furnished
warmth for the stragglers.
Taken altogether, it was the
grandest and most plcssant dem
onstration ever witnessed in Amer
icus, and worthy of the cause it

securing the chemical lights on the
platform in ft ont of the speakers.
Pat Walsh and wife were royally
entertained at a wine supper at
Judge Hawkins’Wednesday night.
He expressed himself as highly
delighted with Americus.
Mr. H. D. Watts had about 100
window panes broken by the can

About two-thirds ol the torches
have been recovered.
Both engine houses were open
for fire, and ready for any emer.
gency. The firo companies can
always be relied upon.
HOW A BLAINE MAN FEELS.
Anuebsonville, Nov. 12.—Quite
a number of our citizens went to
Macon yesterday, on the “Clave-
land and Hendricks train,” which
also took up two cars from Klla-
ville. The Ellaville car had on top
a large canvass sign with tho
names of Cleveland and Hendricks
printed thereon in large letters.
The sight brought tears to the
eyes of your correspondent as ho
thought how much better Blaine
rhymes with Logan, than Cleve
land with Hendricks,
Friday night we had an anvil
chorus, and for a while one was
reminded oi war times. Dr. West
brook telegraphed to Montezuma
for a gallon of Stone Mountain,
but tho Dr. said no rad should
hove a drop, consequently Repub
licans had to quench their vliirst at
tho town pump.
Messrs. Dunkin fi English are
pushing their new store forward as
faBt ns possible. It is nearly cov
ered, and will be, when completed,
the largest store in the city.
Messrs. Pursloy A Clark have
added glass doors to their store,
which is a great improvement,
keeping the cold out and letting
the light in.
The superintendent of the South
western railroad is trying to ob
tain permission from the govern
ment to clear up the land between
the railroad nnd cemetery. This
would benefit both parties, and I
presume no objection will be made,
understand the railroad company
aro also thinking of building a ho
tel at Andersonvillc at no very die
tant day.
