The scare among the negroes

A Tough Pole.
A few days ago a gentleman driV'
ing a two-horse buggy suddenly
turned into a street at a lively rate
and nearly ran into a wagon and
buggy. In bis endeavor to avoid
a collision bo ran bis team on to
the sidownik, when his buggy pole
struck a bitching post and tore it
out of the ground, without in the
least injuring tho pole. It is need
less to say that the buggy was
made by Oliver & Oliver, of this
city.

Yesterday we received a letter
from Chattanooga asking for some
of our “red” papers, tho writer say
ing they suited him exactly. He
claimed to he the “red hottest Dem
ocrat in the South,” and from the
tone ol his letter we agree with
him.
At the inauguration of Grover
Cleveland .»« president of the Uni
ted States Atlanta will play an in
teresting part. The Governor's
Uorso Guard, sixty strong, and
qnder the command of Capt. John
Miiledge, will viait Washington
City, and mounted on snow white
horses, will lead the inaugural pro
cession.

On Thursday night, at the resi
dence of the bride’s father, Mr.
Alfred lleaty was married to Miss
Alice, daughter of our fellow citi
zen, Jno. L. Oliver, Rev. J. W
Jordan officiating,
that the young men of neighboring
towns know where to go when they
want to secure a wife. Amoricus
is still ahead in that line.

Died.
Mr. Rufus Godwin, nn old and
much esteemed citizen of this
county, died at his home near
Magnolia Springs, at 5 a. in. Fri
day. He was nearly 70 years old,
and was simply worn out with age
and the uarcs of II tc. Several
grown up children of his are living
in this and adjoining counties.

nicipal election to be held on tbe 17th
of December next, and respectfully solicit

my official acts shall be in favor of rigid
economy in the collection aud disburse
ment of all public money. I shall favor
the support, promotion, and, whonever
possible, th^ improvement of our public
schools, and to this end I shall encourage
friendly relations, and harmonious ac
tion betwecu tbe city council and the
Board of Education.
I shall favor maintaining our Fire De
partment at its present (standard of excel
lence. I shall favor restricting ad valorum
taxation to one per cent, per annaro, be
lieving that this rate will support the
city government, maintain our public
schools, and also provide a fund to erect
public school buildings.
Upon these subjects, and other matters
of public concern, I shall be pleased to
address the people at some suitable time
