The reason of this is that five companies were in quired to enter to make the race a go, and up. to the last time the secretary of the fair was heard from there had been but three entries. We were told by a gentleman born Columbus a few days ago that the Columbus, Cutbbert A Bslnbridge road would be built, and that two cars of wheelbarrows had bean received in Columbus for workmen. We werealso told that work was going on on somo por tions of the line, but we have not heard of it from any other souroe. Thanksgiving Dinner. The ladies of the Presbyterian chnrch, at a meeting, Monday af ternoon, deeided to give a Thanks giving dinner and sociable on Thursday of next week, Thanks giving Day. Tho dinner will be served in the afternoon, and the sociable will be given in the eve ning. The ladies hope to realize something to help pay for furnish ing their church, and earnestly ask the assistance of the business men. It may be a good way to influence the colored vote, but the man who depends upon his wind carrying the colored boys is liable to gel a trifle left when the count ends. By this we do not mean to say that the darkey is in sensible to reason, but our experi ence with them is that their prom, iscs are about as strong as egg shells, and as easily broken. ■hart craps and Honey. Monday morning workmen be gan taking down the rope attach ment to artesian well No. 1, and putting In a steam force pump to get out the water. It is the idea of tbo council that if tbe well will staud a drain of twenty-five gallons to the minuto for a few days, it will pay to pat in the pump and purchase an engine to work it, thus giving tbe people a constant and never failing supply of water. If this can be done, it will be just as good ns a regular artesian well, on ly a little more costly. The well was being pumped ail day yester day by a Frick engine, and as far as could be ascertained, with no lack of water. The Georgia Lola and Trass Co.
