The editor of tho Rcoordm has known Mr. and Mrs. Golden and many' members of their troupe for many years, and he feels safe in ■tying that.no better troupe hat evy vlsftal Amcricus. Their ap pearance here last spring satisfied those of our people who attended their performances that ail we had ■aid of them was true, and they were promised a big house when ever they should return. Friday flight the new and successful com edy-drama, “Lady Claire,” will be presented, and .we can promise our people a'rich treat. “Um, yum, I smell burnt cot ton,” said a cotton W^SRfiTroit of Toole, McGarrah & Tondee’e warehouse several dayi ago. “Here it is,” said another buyer, picking up a handful of scorched ootton which was lying on the ground. “There is no fire in it, though,” he added, carelessly. “HoW fast will cotton burnl” asked a Recounts man, who was standing by. ' “It will burn faster than any thing I know of,” said the buyer, as he turned the staple around in his hand, and examined it. “Just to show you—here,” and he picked up a handful, of clean cotton and banded it to the reporter. “Now wud that up tight and put your cigar to it. Then fold it up and put your bands over it.” The reporter did so. The mo ment the cigar was applied the cotton oaught and the fire began to sink down like a drill into the handful. He closed his bands over it, and in a short time it became so hot that ho was unable to hold it. Picking up another handful he wrapped it around the fire, and, holding it tightly in both hands, succeeded in crushing out the fire, as lie thought. When it was again opened, however, it began to burn as bard as ever. “It is almost Impossible to put the fire out when once it catches ootton. The closer a bale is pack ed the faster will it barn. It don’t spread out, like anything else, but burns directly to the centre, and consumes the inside of a bale first. I remember onoo iu Savannah on the wharf, when I was billing some compressed bales, that all at once boy yelled ' at me, and looking around I. saw a bale I had just passed fall to pieces and flames begin to come from it. By good luck tbe fire got no further. That bale, probably, had been burning a ooupie of days. Gin houses are often burned up by the pickers smoking in the field and letting a spark drop into a ootton basket It is dumped into the wagon and then into the gin house, and ,does not get fairly started betore night, and before any one knows it, the gin house is on fire and burnt.” “Big Area in warehouses,” he continued, “are often caused by oireicss drivers, who smoke as they drive the cotton to town. The tlnyest kind of a spark will sink into a bale, and if not discovered will burn thousands of dollars worth of cotton. That is why buy ers always carry as much insur ance as they can get. Thera is no telling when a big fire is going to .ANNOUNCEMENTS- to mixu vovjrrr. FOB JUSTICE OF THE PEACEr Hksn authorised to announce the name of W. W.
