Joiinpreeville, Dec. 1 Having
about recovered Irom tbe binding
we had across our forehead, caused
from our visit to you city, we will
try to make our report. We cn
joyed our trip hugely. Got a big
prico for orir cotton, bought goods
very obeaii, and bought a half gal
lon of good old “XXX” and came
homo in order, so wo have been
told. We took in the show, the
Goldens, and must say we were de
lighted.
While ih the city wo had the
pleasure of meeting the Solicitor of
the Recorder. Wc found him a
man of plenty ol cheek, and we
tbinkaucocssful at his calling.
We had the pleasure of meeting
tbe first train on the A. I*. A L.
road, last Friday morning—five
miles this side of town. She was
la charge of Conductor Seals, and
expected to reach Lumpkin some
time dext spring. Ho slopped fif
teen mite3 this side of town, and
went to sawing cross ties for the
road. His was tbe first traction
ongine we ever saw on tho road.
It was run without any mules to
guide or help . pull it, and had a
wagon hooked on behind with the
mill on it, weighing nearly four
thousand, and pulled the hills and
saad btds with . ease. We are go
ing to run one from Richland to
the ville when- the railroad is fin
ished, Come out and sec us.
Wo crossed the now road three
times from home to tbe city, and
found hands working at each cross
ing. WC really do believe we are
going to have tbo road this time,
and not on paper, as heretofore,
and to the Recorder wo tender
Clanks for her assistance in getting
us the road, for without her wc do
pot; believe the goad would ever
have been build.
The cotton crop Is gathered, and

H. West, in this city. He was 84
years of age, bos been almost help
less for several years, finally be-
came paralyzed in his right side, and
lay in bis. bed about two weeks, the
latter week uqable to speak,
was a Primitive Baptist preacher
twenty; years, then , a Univcrealist
preacher forty years, lived happily
with bis wife 57 years, when death
took her from .him. Ho was one
of the founders ot tbe schools and
churches at the Plains of Dura
some forty or fifty years ago, which
gMr. M. B. Pickett so graphically
described in liis reminisences in
the Sumter Republican. He bss
for years expressed a desire to die
suddenly, as his old aud distin
guished friend, the Hon. Geo. R.
Harper did, and had a great fear
or dread of growing old and help
less and becoming a burden to his
people. He did grow old
less, but thereiever wss a man, or
even a child, more tenderly nursed
watched over and cared for than
he was by his son, Dr. W. C. Ken.
drick, his son-in-law, Mr. Jas, H.
West, bis daughter, Mrs.
West,and his grand-daughter, Miss
Willie Harper. Notwithstanding
his death was expected every day
for a week, and all knew be was
prepared and deaired to die, when
tho end came these relatives who
sat by his bed side day and night,
obeying every josture, and admin
istering every comfort possible
were completely overwhelmed witb
grief, as though he was expected
to live always. Such earnest and
solicitous devotion is not witnessed
every day in this cold and selfish
world.
These dear relatives have tho
sympathy of this entire community.
