Amebicds Recorder. W. I*. OIsKSSKBR, Editor. r Webster ( ■ OBIeUI Own »r 1 SATURDAY, »*CVO,18SI. internal revenue taxes on iskey and tobacco might have n'kwept ifiniy MS a grand in- ue of the tariff to, enrich noon- TJlBIFF REFORM HROWUO IK OOiff ..u/.j WHB&Hm ''It la gratifying i to *9* that, at last, the new York. World, which alt along hot been a atannoh pro tectiqn journal, acknowledges that tariff reform is a .necessity.. In a late editorial article it says: ■ In raising the revenue tho Dem ocrats will strive tb relieve persons of' small means by imposing the bhavlest taxes on luxuries and the lightest on necessaries. The whis key tax Will be about the last they will remove. They will, no donbt, be'willing to give the poor man •free tobacco, but they will not re tsmve the tax from cigars, because 'they are W luxuryi ■ If-the fraudulent candidacy of Ben Butler bad succeeded in elec- ting Blaine and seouring a Repub lican House of Representatives tbo internal revenue taxes wbieki been' Qjvaw opolles and make them more than ever tyrants - over labor might bavptaken their place. But the administration of President Cleve land: will guard the interests of labor, and will, when it has the power, so remodel the tax system, as.to bring once more into opera tion tho principle that the burden of taxation, while fairly imposed, shall fall principally on those who can best bear it. The World is shrewd enough to ifcfc that if it wanta to retain its in fluence with its party it must be in harmony with it upon the most im portant question that is now before ilie'country-. At the last session of Congress the aim of the protec tionists,: Democrats as well as Re publicans; was to abolish the inter nal nvanna taxes. The World now ssfmits that the oountry is not pre pared to have the tax removed from whisky and tobacco in order that a high protective tariff may be main tained. It Is not at all probable that any attempt will be made at the coming session ot Congress to -’ rednee tariff taxes, but tho Demo cratic party in tho next Congress will do what it can to carry out ita policy ot tarifl reform. The tariff reform sentiment in the next House will be stronger than it is in this. The proteotionists in the House will not be able to obstruct any tariff legislation that the tariff re form Democrats may propose. TUB POPULAR TOTE. All the ststes have now been offlotally heard from, and the table is now^complete. But it is impos sible to give the real strength of either bf the leading ,'tandidjites^ because in-Iowa, Missouri and 'Ne braska the Blaine and Ilntler forces were fused on one electoral tieket, while In Michigan:,Qefre ^asj ;* Clereland-Butler fusion. ‘Counting^ as we most do, all Clereland-Butler voles for Cleveland, and all Blaine- Butler votes for Blaine,, we'have the following result. .4,447888 4,907,527 .4,(50,SIS 4,836.597 . 807,740:' <• .117;883 . 19,305 . 130,818 Democl.t, Republican,... ISIu.N' Station I), New York City Dull Tinges, Well Wc Should Smile. id Mr. O. 8. Smith, of Washington, Ga., hat written a long letter to the Washington Gazette, In which he takOt'tbe ground that the South ■hould not be greedy during Cleve land’s administration, but that ehe •hould not ait quietly by and be willing to tke all the important Federal offices filled by Northern nun. He, very justly, claims that the South, as it will have to bear its share of the ‘burdens of the administration, should' claim >iU share of the honors. This Is:'tho correct view to take. Thb 'South will not be exact ing In her demands, nor will she be unfaithful to the Democracy if she is Ignored in the -distribution of executive favors, but ehe will. cer tainly expect that her local offices Will be filled by Southern men rath er than by strangeri.
