Logan is a gloomy man at best,
but now-a-days be ia a very
glum speotmen of tbe disgruntled
statesman. He gets a certain grim
satisfaction out of the defeat of
Blaine, but it ia not so complete as
to shut out a gnawing pain as he
thinks of the cold charity of the
world, upon which be must soon
throw himself.
On March ( next for almost the
first time tinoe tbe Mexican war,
Logan will bo without an office, tor
] think ho understands that hi re-
election, even by a Republican
majority : in the' Illinois nlegisla
ture, made tip *s it n9<r is, is well
nigh impossible. Logan does not
give bis birtb date in bis autobiog
raphy, bnt he informs its that be
was a quartermaster in tbe war
with Mexico. Presumably he was
then 20 years old, which would in
dicate that/or at least 40 years he
has beeti on the 1 pay roll of either
the State or the Federal govern
ment. Such a long experience
rather unfits a man for earning bia
living on his own book in tbe
sharp competiona of modern life.
Lo^An will soon dnd thieOuti His
friends talk about his making $25,-
000 a year as an attorney "between
Chicago and Washington.” I take
it they mean afl a “Washington
laWycr”—that is, a cl«im agent.
But even ae'a claim agent, with all
bia experience with pentlon claim
ants, I donbt whether be eonld
make tbe $$,000 a year tbathe now
draws from the government. I
don’t think he hte etved mnob,
and I am told that his estate, what
ever it is, is greatly embarrassed-
He has not, as has been grandiio
quently announced, taken a hand
some bouse on Iowa Circle for the
winter. He has only taken two or
three rooms in a comfortable house
bn that, ciroli The house remains
in the possession of its owner,
Mrs. Case, who will fill snob rooms
as sre not ocoupled by either the
Logans or herself with other
bonders.' The Logans are greatly
troubled about their boy.Manning,
who waereoently practically dis
missed in disgrace from the Mili
tary Academy. In his rough, un
couth way, Logan loves the boy
and had builtgroathopes upon his
admission to West Point. . Now he
Uront of West Point, and' despite
the attempt of the Logans to make
people believe that it wsb on ac
count d! his, sore eyes, everybody
know* tbit it was because of in
subordination and drunkenness.
Mrs. Logan is almost heartbroken.

Atlanta, Dec. 8—The chances
are that when the Democrats get
snugly fixed at Washington there
will be a big prendre'for the offices
in Georgia ^now fliled by Repnbli
cans. The pay Is more than twice
as great for services rendered tbe
government as it is for like services
done the Slate. The Atlanta post
office for instance is paid five hun
dred dollars a. year more than tbo
Governor gets. Tbe District At
torney gets $C,000 a year and tbo
Marsh U gets five or six thousand
and so on. The Treasurer, Comp
troller General, Secretary of State
and officers of like oatiber get from
the State only two thousand a year.
It will pay a man whole entitled to
"spoils” to come in for a sharo of
tho National gruel rather than to
hang on for Slate office;,
If Captain John W. Nelms is
made Marshal it is said Mr. Harry
Hill, a rich young conductor on the
Georgia Railroad, will be a candi
date, for the Offiee of Principal
Keeper of tbo Penitentiary. Hill
baa a fortune of $50,000 left him by
bis grandfather, and his friends
laugh at him when he saya ho is a
candidate for tho office named.
rBSNOIS MOULTON IN ATLANTA.
Tbe death of Francis Moulton,
our mutual friend, recalls an inci
dent that oocurred here during the
Cotton Exposition, when ^oulton
was in Atlanta. A number of gen
tlemen took him in obargo, gave
him a wine supper, plied him with
intoxicating toddie9 and tried
every devioe by which they could
hope to loosen his tongue, trusting
thereby to get the truth of the
Beecher scandal. But amidst it all
Moujton never lost his head f and
when sitn-np came the party, gave
Moulton made a speech at the
exposition. He was a man pf more
than averago size,'fat and careless
ot his personal appoarauco.
CLEVELAND’S INFLUENCE.
An Elbortnn man has written to
Major D. O. Bacon, the Goorgia
Commissioner to tho New Orleans
Jotton Exposition, stating that lie
' as some rare curiosities that he
wishes to exhibit at New Orleans.
One is a negro who has turned
white since Cleveland's election,
and another is a negro who is de
scribed as a creature who has
solved tbe problem ot evolution,
and is probably the missing link.
Tho men wants Major Bacon to
secure a place for his curiosities to
be exhibited.

For aomo weeks, Mr. Marcus A.

publishing column after column of
matter against tbe rejection of
Georgia marble by tba Capitol
