Ommmmmm UTDRDiT, DEC. 30, 1884. THE REASON WHY. The Sedalia Democrat gives the following very sufficient, reasons why the South desires the'uppoint- ment of a Southern man to the of- OSeor postmaster-general: There are abundant reasons why the South should ask for the post- maater-aeoeralahip. TUe,reMons w $1i “IHlIsOE! “• *"** » are business ones, not political. It °“ g / it ,- to ^ e . °! probably does not occur to many Mr. R.nrt.ll ,a„. people north-of the Ohio river that they are enjoying twice as good postal service as the people south of that stream. ” ' as to the truth however. Ever since the war the North has enjoyed all the fast mall seryicp and tbe best of everything that could be bad to facilitate -the rapid and certaih handllng of the malls. In the South, however, the poi to dices have been given strictly ar a reward for party services, and but little attention has been given to the mail service. Men have Why Hr. KaaSall Visits the Seam. { Savannah Kiwi. I Mr; Samuel J. Randall is a great; man in the estimation of I'ennsyl- ' vanlans. He is certainly, a very prominent man In Congress. There isa growing impression tbnt he is a very ambitious man. The press of Pennsylvania baB little else than praise for Mr. Ban. dall. Even the Republican papers have a good word to say' for him. The Independent and Democratic papers take every opportunity to parade his virtuc3. This is becanse there is practlcapy' but one senti ment in Pennsylvania with respect to the- tariff, and that is, that it protective kind. Mr. Randall i»as much in favor of a high protective tariff as “Pig-Iron” Kelley Is. The fact that‘ Mr. Randall was invited Thera Is no donbt t0 vi,[t Atlanta a. few weeks ago, of this statement ?° d . h “ b . e ? n «»»‘‘ed to visit Birm- - ’ Ingham, Ala., and other points in the Southern States daring the holiday recess of Congress, is in terpreted by certain Philadelphia papers, to mean that there has sprung up suddenly in the South a very strong and growing sentiment in favor of a high protective tariff. The Philadelphia .Times, speaking of these invitations to Mr. Randall, been appointed to postmnsterships X’ re W n * *? who wero too ignorant to transact “Pu il “ n<1 conn t tin amn I In of- hletA tnP rMnoi.nl 8 DCfilC III tDG OOUtQ OUl even the smallest kind of general been true of the large cities as well as the smaller ones, ©hr readers will re member that during the campaign we publlrhcd several articles bn Ibis subject, bearing upon the mis management of the postoflice at New Orleans, where, according to the sworn testimony of the post- ““W?* he.yM required by the Republican bosses to appoint subordinates who were in no way capable of performing-the duties cf their positions. We also related oar own petjonal - experience at Mobile, and the loss In transit of several letters bearing (jlalnly printed addresses on tbo envelopes. All these tilings givo n small idea of the utter incapability and unre liability of the postoflice depart ment in the South. Further than this, in a large number of instan ces, box rents are placed at figures twefabd three times as high as in places of the samo size in tho North. ' And this for no other .reason than that the people there, not knowing tho extent to. which they are robbed, make no com plaints. The Southern people be lieve that with a Competent man from their own section in the post- maSter-gsnerai’s office, many of these discriminations will be done sway with, and that they will have tbe same advantages given to other aeotions of the country. Thorc is little wonder, then, that the South asks for tbe appointment of post master-general from that section. The Republican party seems de termined that a Democratic Presl- dyijWWljiotJjfc inaugurated. Hav- lng failed In “ppuntiqx. out" Ooy. Cleveland, they now propose to obeat him out of the office by get ting up a scheme to have the world come to an end on the 4th of Jan uary next. That is all right, how ever, as we believe tbe world was to bavo to come to an end at tbe expiration of tho reign of tbe Devil, and then the mllieninm was to come, which of oonrso moans a Demo cratic administration. . ‘8§fit(8iCTSte Dawson, Deo. IT.—On last Sun day morning nt about 10 o’clock* at tbe residence of Mr. S. T. Jor dan, of Dover, this county, Mias Nan Massey was joined in holy wedlock to Mr. Louis W. Lee, youngest brother of our fellow- tpwnsmpo, Mr. H. S. Lee, W. E. Sessions officiating. They are now occupying tbe old Lee homestead •outb of Dover, and will, no doubt, be prosperous and happy. Lonia haa been a Uttle wild and has much n«eded£jbti Whit ho now has—a very excellent woman to “hold him to the ground.” To tide now At one o’clock Tuesday morning Mr. Amos Q. Stewartdied at bit residence near Sardis Church, this cbui$l ' of npbplexy. /He wat in town and well last Saturday; work ed nil day Monday, and hie sudden death took hit family and friend* completely by surprise. * A very large and appreciative audience' greeted Blind Tom laat night, and the performance was en tirely satisfactory. J.A.F. speak in the South during tbe re cess of Congress. It is not pre tended that Mr. Randall is working up, either directly or indirectly, a succession of personal ovations in the South; nor is it pretended that he is pluming bimBeli for auv Cabi net office. It by, then, is lie invited South? “There is one and only one solu tion of the inquiry, and that is that Mr. Randall represents a sentiment or 1 principle that is rapidly revit alizing tbe South. They are weary of profitless theories and worse than threadbare- prejudices in tbe South. They Want mills and fac tories and prosperous diversified industry, and that is why they in vite Randall to viatt and speak to them. They are simply saying, in a very loud tone of voice, that free trade is a lost cause in the South; thatla all.” The Times is greatly mistaken There is to-day a stronger senti ment in favor of ta/ifl reform in tbe South than there was n year ago, and it will be much stronger a year kendo.'. There are some pro tectionists in the South. They are interested 1 in some special interest which they think flourishes under a high tariff better than it would under a low tariff. They own mills, mines, rice and sugar plantations. Those of tbe mine and mill owners’, however, who favor a high protec tive tariff, are comparatively few. Theso few are tbe ones who are inviting Mr. Randall to visit the South. Through bis aid they hope to work up a protection sentiment. They have vory little reason to hopo that they will make much headway. All of tbe Representa tives and. ong of the Senators in Congress-ftom this State are in favor of tariff reform- it was main ly through the influence of the other Senator, probably, that Mr. Randall was invited to visit this State. It It not Improbable tbit Mr. Randall himself has a purpose in visiting the South. . He may lie looking fora Cabinet position, tho Speakership of the next Houso or a Presidential nomination in 1888, and therefore is trying to strength en himself in this section. There is no reason why Mr. Randall should not seek support in the South. Tho Times, however, ought to be careful not to mislead its readers.i Pennsylvania need not hope to find help In the South to sustain the present Injurious tariff.
