■Who says farmlag don’t pay?
Got. Eaton, of Colorado, cleared
$50,000 on his farm this year.
The New York Morning Journal
says white slarery in that city is
worse than black slavery ever was
in the Booth.
That staunch old veteran Demo,
oral, Capt. Mayes, of the Plains of
Dura, wants to see Gen. McClellan
mads Secretary ol War in Presi
dent Cleveland’s Cabinet. We
second the motion.
Notwithstanding the popular
bellel that there is no such thing
as imprisonment for debt In the
United States, a man has been con-
fined in Ludlow street jail, New
York, six years for the non-pay
ment of a trifling sum.
The Bouse of Representatives at
Atlanta is at present engaged in an
exoiting contest over a general
looaLoption temperance bill. As
we have had no opportunity of be-
oomlng acquainted with the pro
visions of the bill, we cannot say
how wisely our legislators ate
spending their time.
The Montezuma Record says
Congressman Crisp is receiving so
many letters soliciting aid in ob
taining a government Job that be
thinks of employing a clerk to as
sist him in answering them. If
many pf those who apply for gov
ernment positions would work as
hard at something else, they would

An advance of 16 cents per ounce
has taken plaoe in the price ot quin
ine in job lots, bnt the retail price
oi the drug will probably not be af-
feoted. The advance is caused by
a rise in eiuohona bark and a com
bination ot manufacturers and im
porters. As quinine has been ab
normally low, it is thought the pre
sent prices, $1, 16 to$l Upetounoe
will be maintained for some time.
The lard and hog meat trade of
Cincinnati last year was firom 80
to 90 per cent: greater than this
year. This tact aceounts for the
diflerenee In prloe in favor of the
Southern buyers. If our people
will bny their smoke house supplies
in the West, we are glad that they
can get them at moderate prices.
The light shipments of freight this
way also works to the advantage
of the people here by giving them
cheaper freight charges. If any
thing can help the Southern ootton
farmers to stand ihort crops and
low prioes, it will be low prices for
the provisions they are compelled
to buy.
The cotton circular of C. L.
Greene A Co., of Now York, dated
December 18, estimating the crop
foi; 1883—i, arrives at its figures by
averaging twenty-six distinct esti
mates. These are forwarded to
them through tho medium of 1,400
replies to inquiries, from the nine
ootton States, the eight principal
ports and the nine leading interior
towns. The average estimate of
ths 8 Wes 1s 6,739,000 bales; of the
ports, 1 6,880,080 hales; and of the
interior towns, 6,868,000 bales.
The average of these last three av-
etagea it in round numbers, 6,800,-
000.
The circular, by the same process
1 of estimates, arrives at the acreage
for the orop 1884-6, tho rain fall up
to date of October 1,1884, and the
average crop condition up to same
date. Taking this date and com
paring with that of the correspond
ing date In 1888, the cironlar esti
mates the crop of 1884-6 at about
the same at that lor the season Just
closed. The circular says: “We
make no claim for infallibility on
this rule, bnt simply give the re-
salteaa support to those reached
tfcroag h other ohannels.”
