THE POSSUM SUPPER.
What the Cette a Fraternity Old at
their Snyar.
Saturday night, at n few minutes
past nine o’clock, the poasnm sap
per was announced ready fertile'
twenty-five guests.
Two,by two tbe guests marched
in and were seated. Colonel A. 8.
Cutta occupied one end of tbe table,
while Mr. Parker, the originator of
the supper, occapied'the other.
The table presented an elegant
appearance. It was about thirty
feat long, and was bountifully be
decked with flowers, fruits; and
everything to give a' table an en
chanting appearance. In the cen'
ter was an elegant pyramid of cakes,
grapes, not*, banannas and other
fruits, which'towered high above
half dozen smaller pyramids.
On the table was turkey, cold
hath, salads, nnts, raisons, cakes
(five kinds), pickles, wines, and all
the et cetcras that go to make up
fine supper. Mrs. Allen and her
daughters evidently did themselves
justice, and their efforts received
many commendations. It. was one
of the finest repasta ever'laid in
Americus. v
When tbe dining bad fairly be
gan, the possum, hotYnd fine, was
brought, in, and elicited applause,
Toasts began to flutter up and dotfn
the table, each response' being
greeted with applause. To give a
minute’ description of tbe supper
, be impossible, and to say, it
was heartily enjoyed would not be
gin to fill the bill. 'Every gentle
man who was present voted It the
finest occasion of its kind. The
winfes were plentiful, and tbe guesta
did due justlce-to them. After be
ing at the table an hour and a half
or two hours, the company ad
journed to the parlor, where an in
formal lot of fun was bad. At the
olose of tbo festivities, it wa* an
nounced that next Christmas the
warehousemen would have a supper
simtjar to. tbe one held Saturday
night.
Everybody votes the occasion an
immense success.

. “Possum ond .^ter ”
As some ot our oltjr friends do
not understand the mode of catch
ing the possum, wo publish the
Lumpkin Tnd^eudent:
This is the season of the year
when the possum htinttr reaps hi*
richest harvest and is enabled to
invite his friends to partake of
“possum and tator.” A* aorne of
our young ladies seem inclined to
join the procession of possum hunt
ers we tried to learn something
thii week about tka“v*rmipt,’'and
for thii purpose interviewed one
of tbe most successful possum
hunters of the county. He informs
us that tbe proper time to huut is
from the firet of November to tha
first of January. He says that by
November the possums are per
fectly fat, and that thay subsist on
mast of all kinds, baw, persimmons
and ■ roots. Since November lit
be has eangbt over fifty pOMums
varying in weight from four to
nine pounds, after they were
“shucked.” The largest one that
be’ caught weighed nine poanda
net find mode a meal- for thirteen
person*. He says yon can always
tell when yon haves small poasnm,
os the smaller the game tho larger
the tree he will select to hide him-
stifle. The larger possums con-
not climb a large tree and select a
low bush, which they run up to
escape from tbe dogs. Onr in-
formaet hunts with a lantern, and
by holding it behind him shines
the possum's eye, and, by noting
the distance between the eyes, nya
be con come within a half pound
guessing tbe weight of a possum
before ho ever bite the ground.

The a. P. At L. Railroad.
Lumpkin Independent.
If any one will take the trouble
to ride along the ro*d from Amer!
ona to Lumpkin he will donbtleaa
be fully convineed that the long
iMfked fiir railroad to Lumpkin to
now an assured fact. This rood is
graded for a distance ot 85 miles
from Americas, which leaves only
eleven mile* to be finished np, when
the entire grading will be com
pleted. On this laat section there
■re four or five iqusds of bands at
work, covering nearly tbe entire
distance from Richland to Lump-
bin, making a force of between 250
and 300 bands and forty damp
carts. The right «f way has been
cat out with the exception of two
or three miieB and tbe work of
grading Is being pushed very rap
idly, . The road will be graded al
most before some of our people
awaken to tbe realization oi tbe fact
that a railroad la actually being
built. All along the line from Pres-
ton to Americus the cross-ties have
been delivered and are ready for
putting down.
The President and Direotors are
pushing the work rapidly forward
and the probability is that tbe road
will be in operation within twelve
months from the time the enter
prise was inaugurated, which will
give them until next April to com
plete the work. Arrangements have
been mode to buy the roils and tbe
rolling stock, and just as «>on as
tbe cross-ties are pnt di^|i?the
work of track-laying will 1 com
mence.
If there are shy stock-holders
who have not yet paid up their
subscriptions they sboutd do so at
once, as the large force of hands
now in our oounty will soon finish
the grading and will want their
money at once. While the Direc
tors assume the responsibility of
having tbe work done you should
have the money ready in the treas
ury to pay tho cost of constructing
the road.
