Christmas Trade.
Yesterday ait day tbe streets
were crowded with people from
the cunntry, who bad come in to
do their Christmas trading. Tbe
stores were all busy until late iu
the evening, and trade was report
ed as very brisk. Tbo holiday
trade has opened later than usual
thia year, but it bids fair to be as
strong.
Cotton From Stewart.
Late Monday evening people on
Cotton Avenue were astonished to
see a train of eight or ten wagons
loaded with cotton come in and
drive to the warehouses. The
mules looked like they had had a
long drive, and upon inquiry we
found they had been driven from
Richland, in Stewart county, one
of the best larming districts in
Southwest Georgia. This cotton
is just a taste of what Americus
will get from the A. P. 4 L. road
I will ksep my store open until 10
o’clock at night during tbe holidays for
the accommodation of (hole who cannot
get around during the day.

to Mr. Jaok W. Johnson, Atlanta,

of the company in Atlanta. They
found it impossible to make it pay

patronago tbe oitlzens cave it. In
time to come the city may feel tbe
less of it.

The Old and New.
To night the old City Council
meet for tbe last time. It is bat a
formal meeting to adopt reports
and install the newly elected mem
bers. The old Council, three of
whom retire, have done some hard
work for tbe city, more than is
generally known. Of the three who
retire, two, Messrs. Bell and Wil
liams, are old servants of the oity,
having served ns aldermen many
yetrs—Capt. Bell having served
six and Mr. Williams four. Capt,
Morgan was satisfied with a single
term of two years. All three of
the above gentlemen have served
the oity faithfully and well. All of
them have been on Important com
mittees, Bell and Williams having
bad their term at tbe street com
mittee, and Morgan at tbe bridge.
When they leave tbe council cham
ber to-night they can do so with
the eonsoiouaness of having done
their full duty, and whether oursed
or praised, nothing rests a man so
much as a clear conscience.
The thanks of the city are due
the retiring aldermen.
Dr. Burt’s Hog Raising.
In December last, Dr. W. P.
Burt purchased a young sow for
$8, and in January, following, she
brought him eight pigs. One was
killed at two months old, and an
other was lost. In October, three
of tho shoats were killed, and
weighed, in aggregate, 280 pounds.
Two more were killed, in Novem
ber, and anotb'er in December, ag
gregating 375 pound* Last week
tbe sow was killed, and weighed
250 pounds, and the remaining
shoat is now fat, and ah one year
old will tip the beam at 200. Thus
he has raised, with llttlo trouble,
over 1,000 pounds of pork on an
original outlay of $8. Let others
go and do likewise.
Died.
The little four-year-old child of
Mr. W. J. Phillips died, Sunday
night, of congestion of tbe lung*
