Oflatkarpa A thins, Deo. 83.—On Monday afternoon, about two o’clock, a a veritable cyclone swept over Oglethorpe county, just above Maxeys, on tbe Athens branch. It struck tbe place of Dr. MoRee, and blew down every boose except bis dwelling, which was outside the track. Tbe storm blew down alt the fences on tbe farm, and de stroyed an orchard and a large lot of timber. A large tree was blown aoross a railroad out. We have heard no further news from the cyclone, bnt It is feared that seri- ous damage was done els ewhere In the country. Tbe trsck of tbe storm was only 15 yards wide, fearful rain fell In both Oglethorpe and Oconee, accompanied by hail. Mr. Mack H. Young says tha cy clone struck his place near his house, but did no damage except to detflbllsh tree* and fsnees, and killed a fine cow. There were two Jet blaok clouds that sasawed aoross caoh other, and swept every thing In their path. A sweetgum tree was struck and twisted off like a straw. A pine thicket below Dr, MoRee’s was leveled with the earth, not a tree left standing. In faot, every thing in its path was swept clean, but the dtmage was greater in the bottoms than on tbe hillsides. This is the third eyelono that has visited this section, and the first reported tbe present season. There is no doubt about its being a genuine cyclone, for all tbe parties who wit nessed it deaoribed the exaot move ments of one of these fearful visi tors. She proceeded at once to tbe par lor and sent down her name as “Miss Cole, Texas.” She was as signed a room. When ebe came down to breakfast she was very quiet and avoided the looks of any one. Her actions attracted the attentions of tbe guests. After the meal she went ont in the same retired manner, then to the city later, and to several merchants and gentlemen she exhibited a paper which was an appeal for charity, stating that she bad come from Texas where her father died, and she was on her way to Wilmington, N. C., to her relation*. At dinner several attempts of the guests to make her talk were fruitless. La ter in tbe day Sir. George Brown, tbe proprietor of the hotel, ap proached her In the parlor where she sat reading a novel. He thought she waa in trouble and bs’d assist her. She refused to talk to him concerning her condi tion; she said she bad plenty of money, and asked for her bill, which she paid. She left here for Atlanta. TO BE TBIED. Elvira Ivey bas surrendered and will go to trial. She has retained Messrs. Tntt and Lookhart of Au gusta to defend her. Hon. W. Calhoun, Ga., December 85 The discovery of silver in Fort mountain, in Murray county, has crested great excitement in that section, and men are flocking there from all parts of the eountry. Tbe most valuable deposit yet known is on the land of Mr. Tyler, seven miles from Spring Place, Ga., and eighteen from Dalton, wlitob is the nearest point to the railroad. A shaft six feet deep, fonr wide, and twenty long bss been sunk under tbe superintendance of an old miner of seven years experience in the mines of tbe west. He informed yonroorrespondent that tbe “lead” was at least 1,500 feet widt, 300 deep and 88 miles long, being tbe same that i* now worked at Dock Town, in Tennes see. Here tbe old miner says, ore was found at five feet from tbe surfaoe as rich as that obtained at 300 feel-in tbe famous “Comstock,” of Xevada, assaying from $60 to $8,000 per ton. It ia said to be more advantageously situated than any mine in tul west. It will drain itself to a depth of 600 feet; bas a water supply sufficient to operate ten smelter stacks and all other machinery necessary. A railroad conld be easily constructed to it from Tiltob, a distance of about twenty milea. It ia said that ora laying only $4 per ton conld' ba rked with larger profit than $10 ore In the west. Several Urge com panies have sent their agents to see this mine, and onlya few days since n Pennsylvania company offered Messrs. Tyler, Gill t owners of tha ml It, A Blaine Paper on The Dodge.
