We must adopt the policy At ac quisition of territorial aggrandise ment to the southward. It need not necessarily be accomplished b; armed invasion or inaugurated 1 blood. The Nicaraguan treaty la the opening wedge. Let n* drive that home, and, by invetting $100,- 000,000 In a ship oansUhere, secure the country. American enterprise will soon annex the whole of Cen tral America from that base line.” It concludes: "Sectional discord « happily ceased, and the South la primarily and deeply interested in the march of empire southward, and her statesman, by at once championing a bold and brilliant polioy in that dlreotion, will open a new era for the entire oonntry and map out a safe and short road to prosperity and continued nation al growth, insure tranquillity at borne and add to the glory of onr great repnblio.” They have a peculiar way of dis posing of mad dogs in Sonth Car olina. A few days ago an animal in Mecklenburg county was at tacked by hydrophobia and bit several other dogs, bogs and aheep. All these animals were killed, ex cept a valuable setter belonging to Mr. MoOorkle. This gentleman refined to slay hirpet, and pre vented "a mad dog committee” that bad been organised foam as- waiting it by shotgun persuasion. Thereupon the committee appealed to the law, and the oaee came np before ’Santre Maxwell After ten witnesses were examined MeCorue compromised the cate by agreeing to send the dog ontaide the State. I tiff, Miss Sarah Althea Hill, claim ing to he the wife of ex-Senator Sharou, was for a divorce and di vision of the common property. Judge Sullivan's decision is very comprehensive, containing 36,000 words. After reviewing the testi mony be concludes by declaring' that under the laws of California the plaintiff is the legal wife of 8baron, and as sueb, on the ground of williul desertion, is entitled to a divorce and a division of the com- mob property. The lattor is es timated to' be wbrth $10,000,000. The verdict is a great surprise to the public, it having been generally supposed, from the contradictory character of the testimoney, that the plaintiff would have been non suited.' It is believed that Mr. Sharon will appeal. W. H. L. Barnes, the leading counsel for ex-Senator Sharon- saysof Judge Sullivan’s decision. ' It is an entire surprise to the profession, both as to the law and facts. The judgment, if it stands, will not be a serious pe cuniary injury to Mr. Sh&ron. I don’t think be bas $10,000 worth of property which conld be made subject to the deoision. Mr. Sharon is greatly annoyed by the present deoision, but has not the slightest idea of sabmistion, aad, of course, will appeal, and we are confident of reversing the deoision. The suit brought by Mr. Sharon in the Uni- ted States Circuit Court to have the marraige contract declared in valid, will be prosecuted.” The plaintiff’s counsel will make application for counsel fees and $6,000 per month alimony for 14 months, or since the beginning of the case. Washington, Deo. 26.—People interested in base ball have been talking for several days of a wager, said to have been made by Super intendent McLangblinofthe Wash ington Monnmont, tbat Paul Hines, the well known fielder, recently with the Providence nine, could not catch a base ball thrown from one of the windows at the top of the monument. MeLaughlin said to day that he had made no such wager, but that be was perfectly willing to do so. He said that he did not believe Hines, or anybody else, could catoh a bail thrown from the top of the monument He wonld probably have no difficulty in stopping it, for the engineers of ofthemon ament calculates roughly that the bail would descend in about five and a half seconds, with a speed at the bottom equal to about 180 feet per second. The ball would not be going more ra pidly than many that are easily caught on the ball field. The trouble would lie in the combined difficulties of seeing the ball (and determining its probable position at the ground. It is probable that the monument will be ntillaed by some of the scientific bureaus of the government foi experiments in velocity. Harvlaaa*.
