WEDNESDAY, JAN. 14, INNS
The South, with it* natural re
sources, its genial climate, its al
most, illimitable forests of virgin
timber of nearly every variety, its
exhaustless mines of coal and oar
and precious metals, its excellent
soil, and all else that goes to make
up a country, whose superior is
nowhere to be found, has awak
ened from its sleep and is now
pushing forward with a vim and
energy that may well challenge the
admiration of the world.
The depression both in agricul
tural and commercial circles in the
WeBt is greater than it is in the
South. It looks as i( the “Star of
Empire” would soon take this di
rection. Iu a recent artiole ou the
advantages offered by the South to
settlers, the Boston Globe says that
‘‘with the whole South offering un
equaled inducements to immigra
tion and the investment of capital,
it cannot be long before the vast
streams of men and money now
rijluging the bleak Northwest will
turn to the most delightful region
of the land, its semi-tropical lati
tude.”
Miss Jennie Turner is probably
the first female Notary I’ublic in
any State east of the ltocky Moun
tains. She lives in New York city
and was appointed by Governor
Cleveland several months ago, af
ter he had considered the applies
lion for several weeks. In the City
Court, Tuesday, au objection was
made to a plea beeause it was at
tested by her—a female. After
long argument, the judge decided
that she was not disqualified from
holding office under the constitu
tion of New York, and the plea
was admitted as being properly at
tested. Mrs. Lockwood has an ad
ditional reason to “thank God and
take courage.”
At the sale of pews in Plymouth
Church last week the bidding was
quite spirited at first, but soon
dropped off. It was the thirty-
eighth annual sale, and the total of
premiums and rentals realized was
$27,256. Last year the amount
was $.‘14,839, and in 1883 it was
$38,172. In 1875, the most pros
perous year in the history of the
church, the sales amounted to ^68
997, and they have grown smaller
every year since that time. The
sales Tuesday were much larger
than Mr. ilceckcr’H enemies were
willing to admit they would be
before the sale opened, and proba
bly the decrease represents little
else besides the influence of the
business depression, and the gene
ral decline of interest in Mr. Beech
er's preaching. When the previ
ous rales are considered thcro is
little room for belief that there is
any political significance in the re
sult of this one.
DIE IIAltI).
From the number of contests in
this State over the county offices,
it would seem that the defeated
candidates die hard. Some of them
having held their offices for a num
ber of years, seemed to regard
them as their personal property,
and that they were defraud.d be
cause the people saw fit to choose
some one else. Others seem to
have been so confident of election
that they think nothing but fraud
could have defeated them. There
are undoubtedly cases where a can
didate is right in contesting, but
they arc few. Where the result is
a very close vote, a recount may
sometimes change the result; but
where there is anything like a de
cisive majority, it may be pre
sumed that the will of the people
has been very fairly expressed, and
the attempt to act aside that ma
jority by mere legal technicalities
and quibbles is cot often success
ful, and only serves to show that
the contestant is more anxious for
the office than that justice should
be done. Most of the notices of
contests are served under the spur
of the moment, before good judg-
