OBclal Orifiiu of Webster Com*).
SATURDAY, IAN. 11, IWI*.
It is reported tliat Mr. Tildeii
proposes to leave his country seat
known as Greystone, to be used as
a school in which to teach young
politicians. The trouble with the
politicians in this country is that
they know too much already.
The last Georgia Legislature
passed an act placing a tax “upon
all dealers in pistols, toy pistols,
revolvers, pistol or revolver cart
ridges, dirks or bowie knives, the
sum of one hundred dollars for
each place of business in each coun
ty where the same are sold.”
The Delaware (Ohio) Daily Ga
zette, published by our old friends,
A. Thompson A Sons, has entered
upon its second year with every
evidence of prosperity. It is the
handsomest daily we have seen,
and it is as good as it is handsome.
The fact that Delaware can sus
tain such a paper is evidence of a
growth and enterprise in our na
tive city that we arc pleased to sec.
We wish the Gazette and its pub
lishers continued success, lor they
deserve it.
* The Charleston News and Cour
ier mentions the fact that various
parties of negroes, numbering sev
eral hundred in all, have been tak
en from Virginia, West \ irginia
and Kentucky to fdl the place ol
the striking miners in the Hocking
Valley Mines in Ohio. Our Charles
ton contemporary thinks the ex
periment an interesting one, and
that the Southern public will watch
with some furiosity the reception
acco<4#d to these llrotliers in
Black by*their Brothers in White
of all degrees, and note how far
the practice of the latter is to be
found to coniorm to their publish
ed receipts. “It will now,” says
that paper, “be made more or less
apparent whether the liberal views
of Northern Republicans with re
gard to negro competition and
equality in general arc intended to
apply to all parts of the country
alike, or to the South alone."
Farmers should raise provisions
instead of mortgages. It is the
better way.—Albany News.
You are wrong—they should
raise their mortgages by raising
provisions.—Amebici s Rxcoxpeb.
No; you can't use the word
“raise” correctly in the sense of
“to raze” or “to cancel.” By fail
ing to make their farms self-sus-
taing, farmers do raise—that is.
produce—mortgages in just as cor
rect a seuse as they raise, or pro
duce, cotton. Our contem|iorary
musn’t try to put up a job on the
Knglish language.—Albany News.
We are not trying to “put up a
job on the English language," but
merely to correct our brother's u-e
of it. We used the word "raise”
in the sense of “to lift," slid the
best way of raising, or lifting, a
mortgage oil a farm is to raise pro
visions. The News will certainly
agree with us that the heaviest
weight that can be put upon a farm
is a mortgage, and that it is no
small task to raise, or lift, it off.
We reiterate that “farmers should
raise their mortgage by raising
their provisions.”
Judge Henderson’s supplemen-]
tal report shows that the average ;
cash price of corn in Georgia last
yenr was 88 cents, while the aver
age credit price was 25 cents
greater. The average cash price :
of bacon was ll cents, while the
credit price was I4 j cents. These i
prices show the percentage paid I
by those who bought oil six months’ j
time as about 28 on corn and 36
on bacon, or at the rates of 50 and
CO per cent, per annum. It would
require an extremely profitable
business to stand such a (Lain as
this, and it cannot be fcondered at
that farmers who buy supplies on
credit do not prosper. It is not
well, In fact, to buy them at all, for
the cost of home made supplies is
a great deal less than the cash!
market price. Farmers can pro- [
duce their own supplies, and a!
majority of them do so; but uuite |
a large proportion seem to be un-;
affected by experiences and warn- j
ings so often repeated.
On the heels of the rumor that!
General Grant is a poor man comes '
the report that President Arthur j
will retire trom the White House I
with little or no bank account. It j
has been said that the salary of j
$50,000 barely keeps presidential
soul and body together. The
Washington Star contradicts this
false impression. That paper re
minds tnc public of the fact that in
addition to the President’s salary
of $50,000, a house is provided,
and not only a house, but nearly
every thing else—servants, horses,
light, fuel, flowers, music, etc. So
that it would be difficult for a
President to spend over $l,000 a
month. And with $38,000 laid by
annually since he entered upon the
duties of the office, President
Arthur ought to retire with a com
petency.
