THIRD ANNUAL
TUESDAY. JAN. 30, ASHA.
The Bishop ot Melbourne has or
dered prayers to lie offered that
rabbits may not become mothers,
all endeavors to exterminate them
having proved fruitless. What
next! 1
Wednesday is a good Democratic
day. The 4th of Maich falls on
Wednesday this year, and it will
witness the inauguration of Cleve
land. It is noted as a curious coin
cidence that Jefferson, Jackson and
Buchanan were also inaugurated on
Wednesday. This may be taken
as a good omen for Cleveland.
The last woman fixed upon as
the prospective bride of Mr. Cleve
land ia the widow of the late Chan
cellor Pruyn, o f Albany. She is
handsome, 36 years old, has but
one child, and is worth about five
millions. If she is amiable and ac
complished the new President
might do worse than to verify the
vagaries of a correspondent.
The Jacksonville, Fla., Times.
Union favors the appointment of a
few colored men to ollloe in the
Northern States. It thinks that
black postmasters in Pennsylvania,
lthodc Island, Massachusetts, Ver
mont and Maine, would give the
people son# idea of what they have
been so anxious to fasten perror-
nently upon the South.
The death of Major Crane, of At
lanta, one of the Capitol Commis
sioners, made a vacancy in the
Board, which has been filled by the
Governor appointing lion. Evan I’.
Howell, of the Constitution. A
better appointment could not have
been made, for Mr. Howell is en
terprising, energetic and public
spirited, and what he has done for
Atlanta he will do for the State.
Senator Vest certainly got even
with Ingalls in the senate when the
latter claimed that Vest was brag
ging of having been a member of
the Confederate senate. Looking
straight at the Kansas senator, Mr.
Vest asserted that whatever body
he belonged to, he had come duly
credential), and there was no
question about his election. As
Ingalls’ credentials have been ly
ing on the senate table for six years
it Laving never been decided wheth
er he secured Uls election by brib
ery or not, Mr. Vest evii|^>tly had
him foul.
Bookworms arc now engaged in
tracing the origin of the term,
“plumed knight,’’ an epithet made
somewhat notorious by its strange
misapplication to Mr. Blaine, pro
fessional politician and late candi
date for President of the United
States. They say the man who
first used it ia connection with Mr.
Blaine stole It. Quit* likely. They
will steal anything in Washington.
Don’t you remember how they
stole even the Presidency in 1876?
However, we hope the bookworms
will discover who was the first
“kleptomanic”—to put it mildly.
Wouldn’t it be funny if it should
turn out to be an ancestor of Mrs.
Hayes' husband?
Politicians are not generally as
candid as was Col. Thomas M.
Holton, the Speaker of the North
Carolina Legislature. It seems
that In his canvass for the Speak
erabip he made a number of prom
isee of Chairmanships of various
committees should be be elected
He was elected and faileu to keep
one or more of those promises.
Wednesday last Vr. Leazer, who
L«rl been promised the Chairman-
obipof the Committee on Education
and to which he bad not been ap
pointed, arose and charged the
Speaker with perfidy, and as being
unworthy of the confidence of his
friend*. The Speaker simply re
plied that be bad promised before
bis election to appoint Mr. Leazer
Chairman of the Committee on Ed-,
ucation, but that since bis election
aa Speaber he bad decided that it
would be unwise to make auch an
appointment. Tbe quiet and sim

jab is an independent kind of a'
man and as shrewd and slippery as
Mephistopholes, full of legal ex
pedients and knows every political
method ever in vented. He was
speaker of the house in 1875, when
Independent ism swept the State, 1
and he then proved himself more
than a match for tlu^best partia
mentarians. We know him well, j
and know him well enough to know
tlial he is a queer fish and an ugly
customer to handle.
As soon as it was asertained
that the present legislature w
be a tie politically without him,!
Haines announced himself an “In
dependent,’’ although lie had been
elected on the regular Democratic
ticket, and gave it to he under
stood that he was a candidate lor
the speakership. When the legis- j
lature met, Haines retused to go I
into the Democratic caucus, and
the caucus nominated a man by the
name of Cronkrite for speaker,seek
ing to gain Haines’ vote by select
ing him for temporary speaker. At
the election for the latter position,
Haines refused to vote, an l the
result was a tie between Cronk
rite and the Republican nominee.
The next day one Republican join
ed with the Democrats in voting
(or liaincs, and he accepted the
position. Now comes the curious
features of the ease. Having been
placed in the chair as temporary
speaker Haines refuses to vote on
the election of a permanent speaker j U®'' MASTODON GUANO H&i
