Sewing Cloth With Hair.
Baltimore San.
A well known merchant tailor of
this oily, while talking with a Sun
reporter about the pleasures and
pains of a tailor, said: “A good
tailor is an artist. I know that few
are disposed to allow his preten
sions to the claim, but I can give
instances to prove it.”
“As for instance,” suggested the
reporter.
“Hi9 skill in mending a piece of
cut cloth so neatly that an expert
cannot detect it.”
“How is that done?”
“With hair from his wife’s head.
It often happens that there is a
smnll cut place in a bolt of goods.
It may not be known until after a
garment lias been cut out. But
when it is discovered, the tailor
cannot afford to throw the piece
away. He simply calls on his wife
for several strands of her hair,
hands them to tke best skilled
workman in the house and bids
him mend the rent. He uses a very
line needle and does his work so
perfectly that it is never known
that the cloth was cut. I once
knew a tailor who got into a peek
of trouble from having cut the but
ton holes on the wrong side of a
costly coat. He finally overcame
the difficulty by mending them
with his wife's hair. Once upon a
time, as the story books say, I cut
out and had made a fine cloth coal
which was discovered before being
sent home to have a detect in it
which could not be remedied with
out si itching in a piece of cloth
the size ol a ten cent silver piece.
After puzzling over it for half s
day I secured a sharp tubular steel
instrument, such as one would
think might be used f or cutting
gun wads. With this I cut out the
defect in the cloth, fitted a piece in
the hole taken from a scrap of the
same material, and sewed it with
hair. Of course I was careful to
have the nap run right. It was so
perfectly done that no one ever
discovered it.
Then, pilgrim turn, thy cares forego
All earth born cares are wrong,
Man wants but little here below-
Nor wants that little long.
Begone my cares, the pilgrim said,
