A CAPITOL ROMANCE.

[Washington Cor. Chicago Tribune.)
There appears to bo an endless amount
of material about the capitol of the
I nited states for a romance, or a scries
,,'f them for that matter. It was only
the other day that 1 heard of an inci
dent that occurred during the war that
would certainly give a romance writer at
least a good suggestion. The capitol is
the growth of years—almost a century
of work upon dineront plans and under
the direction of many minds. The re
sult is that there is such a perfect
labyrinth of corridors and out-of-the-
way place within Its walls that one may
be'about the capitol for years without
learning of all tho places in the ramb
ling building.
This much of an explanation is neces
sary in order to appreciate the remark
able story told by John Chaun ey, who
lias been in the constant employment of
the house for the last twenty-seven
y ears. In ransacking one of the upper
liooks of the house side of this building
(liauncey eainc upon an out-of-the- way
c orner beyond one of the most c rooked
turns in the rarely-visited regions of the
reserve records of the house document
rooms. Chauucey, who knows more
about the building than any other man
in it, in his wandering about that morn
ing came into a corner which he had not
visited since tho war.
As he entered this long-forgotten
nook he was surprised by the sight of a
military uniform stretched out upon tho
Hoor. A gun and the accoutrements of
a private soldier of the army of the
I nited States wore in one corner. The
uniform was still in very fair condition,
although badly moth-eaten. It lay u|>on
the tlooras if it had been hastily stripped
off by its owner. But how- had it come
there! John ( hauncey could not for a
few moments tell, but soon he remem
bered that dnring the war tho capitol
building was used as a barracks for sol
diers. The house itself was used as a
hospital. A soldier who belonged to a
Massachusetts regiment, and who had
partially recovered from a wound, was
employed for sentry duty in the upper
part of the hall.
One night he w-andorod off to this
out-of-the-way cornor, where he ex-
lierienecd a sudden relapse. His old
wound broke out and he died in this
comer nlono. His libdy was not re
covered for soveral days. He was
charged up as a deserter. When his
Issly was finally discovered his uniform
was taken off and the remains carried
out. From tho day thnt the body was
carried away until Chauneey walked
into this comer twenty years after
wards, no one had visited the placo
where the |x>or soldier diod. It the
hall had not been overcrowded so that
ilie odor of the decaying body had not
jienctrated to one of the upper store
rooms into which incalids had been
carried, this discovery might bavo been
delayed fur year*. John Chauneey might
have found a grinning skeleton in full
uniform stretched out in this dusty
corner. M'hat a story that would have
made. The accoutrements of this

of the Farmer.
[Forelm letter.)
The French minister of finance has
issued a circular to people in the coun
try, in which he warns thorn against
destroying toads, lady-bugs, and insect
ivorous birds, which he pronounces the
friends of tho farmer. Toads exist al- i
most exclusivel
bugs
Tile littl _ , —„
plant lice, scale-bugs, and many harin-
uil insects. The birds that feed on in
sects cannot be too well protected. The
hoy who kills one of these or a toad
should lie whi|i|ied, and the man should
be fined and imprisoned.
