The Cincinnati Enquirer seems
to be endeavoring to rival tbe
Police Oaxette, and under tbe
atatute will be barred from circu
late in Oeergla.
March 24th will be “Georgia
' Day” at tbe Exposition. The Gov
ernor, accompanied by tbe Horae
Guards, will be present, and the
Macon Volunteers are thinking
about going.
We would suggest to our Macon
friends that it takes a combination
to make a scandal—a filthy ferret
to unearth it and a thousand tools
to circulate it. The Maconites
aided the Cincinnati Enquirer in
its scheme by buying one thousand
copiea of tbe paper.
They say that indignation against
Senator Brown for his action in
the Speer matter is already subsid
ing in Atlanta. 01 course Joe
Brown ia absolute boss ia Georgia,
and nobody knows and realizes
this better than the Senator him
self He can do as he . pleases,
knowing that nobody is going to
do anything about it.
Tbe Librarian of the Boston Li
brary has made a historical discov
ery. It is to tbe eflect that the
Philadelphia Declaration of Inde
pendence was read on the 4th of
July, but was not signed before
the Sd of August, and Thornton,
of New Hampshire, did not sign
until five years after. He wanted
to see who was going to whip be
fore he declared his independence.
The Atlanta Constitution of
Thursday indulges in some very
plain talk toward the editor of tbe
Macon Telegraph and Messenger—
so plain, indeed, that it might be
called severe. If there is not a
hostile meeting between the edi
torial forces of the Constitution
and Telegraph, it will be because
of tbe efficiency of the police force.
These two great metropolitan pa
pers furnish a shining example of
editorial courtesy for tbe editors
of the rnral press.
The Southern Immigration As
sociation will meet at tbe Exposi
tion on the 10th of next month.
Important subjects affecting the
industry and progress of this sec
tion will be discussed. The matter
of promoting immigration, not on
ly from foreign countries, but from
tbe Northern and Western States,
has been sadly neghoted by the
people of the South, most deeply
interested landowners, capitalists
and railroad companies. These
should bestir themselves in pro
moting immigration. To this end
the beet organized association yet
formed will meet at New Orleans
on the day above mentioned, and
we hope that its deliberations will
result in permanent good to our
country.

The State agent reported that
the purchasing ability of the gen
era] mass of tbe people, especially
tbe farmers, on account of tbe par
tial monetary crisis in tbe country,
and the low prices which they re
ceived for their crops of cotton,
was considerably impaired daring
tip summer and fall, and had tbe
