w i.|>o you see that man ahead?" askod
^ a friend. a« we were strolling op Broad-
wav. "Well just keep your eye on him
for a moment,"
The person referred to was about
twenty feet in front of us; well dressed,
though in a Bohemian sort of a fashion,
•out was strolling along looking at the
sights in the shop windows. The only
thing about him at all out of the com-
inon” run was the fact that he carried
under his left arm a square box of
rather large size, it might have been a
case of surgical instruments, for it was
carefully covered with a green covering,
and had quite a profotsional appear-
'"I'he man strolled along ! Uarely,
looked up at the windows, stopped for
a moment to glance at the pictures in
one of the big art stores near Eighth
street, then joinedthe throng and kept on.
I was beginning to wonder why he
didn’t shift that confounded box over
the ether arm, when he turned suddenly
and in a very natural manner stumbled
and dodged before a tall, thin man, al
most behind. The man with the box
dodged before him a moment, in the
ludicrous way that is often seen on the
street; then both stopped, muttered an
apology, and so got clear of each other
and were soon in the crowd that was
surging up the street. The box, I no
ticed, was” now undei the other arm,
and was carried rather carelessly. The
owner seemed to havo lost his interest
in 'he stores and was about to hail a
Broadway stage and probably disap-
]>ear, box and all, when my friend
stepped up and touched him on the arm
and said. "Well, did you get him?”
The man with the box looked up
quickly, smiled when ho saw who it was,
then broke into a rippling laugh. I was
_ finally introduced, and ill a quiet corner
of the Hotel Dam cafe learned tho
mystery of the box. There are tricks in
ali trades but ours," said tho tall man,
lighting a cigar and watching the smoke
ascend upward, ring after ring. "But
I'm tired. I've been following that man
you saw me pretend to run into all day.
I went down-town with him this morn
ing, followed him over to Brooklyn, then
back to tho Jersey City ferry, anil finally
he started up town, and 1 got him as
you saw.”
"What were you going to do?" I asked.
"Blow him up? ’
"Hardly,” replied the stranger, with
a laugh; then taking up the box he gave
a glance around, sent tile waiter to see
if a man by the name of Dobbs was on
the register, anti quickly lifted the
i over, and instead of a dynamite ma
chine there was a simple photographic
instrument known as a pin-nole camera.
"Yes,” continued the owner of the
box, “this is a phase of the detective
system, and whether I am a detective or a
photographer, I don't know. The latter
is my profession, ami I try a little of
Ujth. They tell mo 1 have an innocent,
far-away look that is quite necessary in
i he make-up of the detective. Yes, this
machine is my idea, though I believe
there are others in use in England and
France. The idea is this: This lfttle
box contains tho camera and at this end
thero is a small round hole that closes
or opens by a spring that I govern by
my thumb or finger. Now, no one
would ever guess what it was; but if 1
can get anyone in front of it and snap
that spring, in the tenth of a second
your image lias been idelihly stamped on
the plate within; in other words, it’s in
stantaneous photography, and used
whenever you want to take a man’s
picture without his knowing it.”
"Is there much of this sort of thing
done?"
"Yes, I do a good deal of it," was the
reply. "The street dodging trick is the
liest. The detective on watch pointed
him out to mo, and the only thing I hud
to do was to get in front of'him anil get
a full front view. This 1 can generally
do by pretending to run into a man, and
while we lire trying to pass each othor I
get him perfectly anil ho does not sus-
l>ec*, it, thinking mo some clumsy boor
who does not know which way to turn.
1 have taken people in all sorts of situ
ations.
"I have photographed people at the
church and theatre. At the theatre 1
had a hard time on soverul occasions,
but once I found that the man I wanted
had a front seat, and I secured a posi
tion in the orchestra. There are ways
of fixing these things, and 1 managed to
K®t a picture distinct enough
for recognition. I am also em
ployed by artists to do perfectly
legitimate work. Tlius the other day
I was sent tor by an artist who had
an order to paint a man's picture and
wanted to get some photographs show
ing a perfectly natural expression. I
followed tho gentleman about all day.
1 took him when he had a smile on his
face, as he met a friend at tho L station.
I got in a fresh plate and next took him
as he read the ticker from tho stock ex
change, I got him again in tho Astor
house, and. in fact, 1 had live or six dif-
rerent views liefore night. Another kind
of business 1 have is to take the photo-
J graphs of people who won’t have them
,a . k willingly. You would be aston
ished to know how many persons are
superstitious about it. A. T. Stewart
