Look Out for Burglars.
On Wednesday night, the 25tb,
the AUen House was visited by
one or more of these detestable
wretches, who lifted about thirty
dollars from one of the rooms of the
hotel. One of the guests, after
securely locking his door and ex
amining windows, quietly laid him
self down to rest. Early next
morning his door was found un
locked and his clothing in the mid
dle of the floor, minus the thirty
dollars of paper money. Some few
dollars iu silver in another pocket
was left untouched. Another room
was also lound unlocked in which
two gentlemen were sleeping, but
nothing missing. The occupants
of both rooms declare that they
had on retiring locked their doors.
Haw these scoundrels got In we
are at a loss to understand, unless
they had previously secreted them
selves in the rooms, and waited till
the weary travelers had safely
reached the land of dreams, when
No. 17 arose to find that he was
fleeced. They seemed to be very
merciful to the rest, many of whom
had large sums of money in their
possession.
We had seen in almost every
paper that these wretches were
paying their nightly respects to
neighboring cities, and had begun
to think they would spare our
lovely city the curse of their bale-
fill presence. All would do well to
look out lor these villains, und give
them a warm welcome with hot
buckshot.

Mr. J. W. Wanace, of Bruns
wick, is in the city for the purpose
of selling jewelry on an original
plan. He sells his jewelry at a
fixed price and then gives his cus
tomers a chance at a member ol
prizes, they throwing dies for the
same. It seems, however, that the
city ordinance fixes a license of
$500 tor doing business by chance,
the idea hoiDg to thus nhut out
wheels of fortune and other gam
bling devices. Mr. Wallace con
siders his business perfectly legiti
mate, he having followed it in
Brunswick, and as he is licensed
by the State, and proposes to make
a permanent business of it in Amor-
icus, he thinks he should not he
classed among gamblers and con
fldence men. The Council meets
this morning, and will take the
matter into consideration,jjud will
probably so modify the ordinance
that Mr. Wallace will be enabled
to open up his business.

Mias Hurst will shortly give an
entertainment in Americus far the
benefit of tbe Library Association.
We are glad our people will have
another opportunity of witnessing
this marveioua phenomena. She
has recently been on an extended
tsur through the United States,
during which she has drawn im
mense crowds to witness tbe mani
festations ef her wonderful power.
Savants and scientists have tried
in vain to solve the mysterious
problem she offers, and it is to-day
as little known as ever. Miss
Hurst has improved greatly since
her former visit to Americus, and
our people should not fail to wit
ness her performance. We learn
that an effort will be made to ob
tain reduced rates on the railroad
so that parties on the line of road
may come and see her. Due notice
of the exact date of her appearance
will be given later.
