Official Orpin or Sumter County,
official Organ of Webster t'oiinty.
THURSDAY, M.tBCIl l'i. 1»SS.
SORTHEKN IMJUHKATIOS.
We are pleased to oee that the
Sumter County Agricultural So>
cie'.y, at its last meeting, took up
the question el immigration and
made the first step toward forming
an immigration bureau, for the
purpose of collecting, publishing
and circulating information regard
ing this county, with a view of in
ducing immigration. It is a timely
step in the right direction, ana we
hope that it will be promptly fol
lowed by such other steps as will
soon give us a live and effective
organization.
To show the nesd of sncli an
organization, and what a'finc^eld
is opened for it, we give a few ex
tracts from letters which we have
received from the North this week,
and they are but b sample of the
letters we arc* receiving almosi
daily in reference to a abort sketch
of this county published in the
Prairie Farmer a couple of weeks
ago.
A farmer from DcsMoines, Iowa,
Writes: "I sees piece in the l’rairic
Farmer setting forth the good
qualities of Southweit Georgia
The correspondent tells about
crops and yields, but does not say
anything about stock. We North
ern people like to raise stock. Now,
asl have.somenotion for the South,
I would like to know about the
stock business—if bogs, cattle and
sheep do well there. 1 want to
know whet kinds of fruit can be
profitably grown there; if you have
good water or not, and whether it
ia a timbered country or prairie,
and if a Republican dare speak Ins
mind or not, or if they will uilow
free speech as we do in the Noitii;
If they will allow a man to vote his
sentiments without being molested.
The cold blizzards in Iowa this
winter have caused many people to
• think about going South. Now,
Mr. Qlessner, as you are the pub
lithsr of a pape., suppose you prim
a circular setting forth your coun
try just as it is and answer the
questions I have asked, and more
if you think of any, and send the
circulars to me and 1 will distribute
them in our country. People in
this State are not acquainted with
the South."
A farmer from Pleasant View,
Michigan, writes: “Please send me
a late copy of your paper, as 1 with
to inform myself concerning that
portion of Georgia in which you
are located. I wish to know some
thing concerning the soil, climate,
.advantages of market, schools,
churches, society, etc. I have lived
in this northern country of almost
endless snows nearly nine years,
and I am entirely disgusted with it,
and intend to change my location
as soon as possible. I have ICO
acres here, and as soon ns I can
sell for anything at all I shall go to
a warmer climate. How are taxes
with you? lfero they me alonii-
nably high. At this waling we
have ovei three leet of snow, and
will probably have a heavy suow
fall yet before this month is out
steps toward furnishing the infor-1
m&tion naked for in a complete
form, and especially ph ased to see
the farmers of this county moving |
in the matter, for it will hive assur
ance to ttieir Northern brethren
that they will be welcome lie e and
will be treated with kindness when
they eome. What tiic farmers of,
this county have started the peo
ple of Americus should aid, lor to j
fill up the county wi h industrious
and energetic farmers will greatly
increase the ttade and prosperity I
ol the city'. A ny aid that the Re- \
oiutr.it can render in this enterprise !
will be cheerfully given in the tu-
ture, as it has in the past.
It is saitl to be the intention of ,
President Cleveland to re appoint
Postmaster Pearson, of New York 1
city, whose term expires on tlie
21st, on the ground that he has
made an excellent officer and has
taken no active part in politics.
In doing this, Mr. Cleveland w on! 1
be but following out the lines laid
down in bis civil service reform
letter; nut it will give great dissat- t
isfactiou to many democrats.
