Mr. 0. W. Couucil won a fine bat
from Cepli. Buchanan the other
day very neatly. He told Ceph. h*
would drive him tws miles behind

that they were the best he ever
rode behind, he would give him a
fine hat, but it they were acknowl

The Republican objects to clip
ping a single item from the Rx-
corder, but iu the same issue in
which .be objection is made it
copies from tbe 1<ecordf.r a six
column account of the inaugura
tion, pictures and all. Of course
this is enterprising in its part, and
shows that the new management
knows news when it sees it, but it
is a trifle inconsistent. It is all
right, though, and we are proud to
furnish the news to our neighbor.
Call again and help yourselves to

Shooting Affray
From a gentleman who wss in
Montezuma Monday we gained the
particulars of a shooting stiray be
tween Messrs. Jim Coley and Ben
Hartsfield. The trouble began in
a billiard saloon. Some hot words
were passed when Coley, who was
intoxicated, went to his own store,
and in a short time returned and
drew & pistol on Hartsfield, who
was in his own store. H .rtsfleld
caught the weapon in time to send
the bullet into the ceiliDg. Alter
tbe flriug others interfered and the
afiair dropped.
The Smoker's Prise.
The elegant case offered by
Schumpert k Honey to tbe smoker
who buys the most cigars from
them before May 2d is attracting
considerable attention from the
smokers, and quite a rivalry is go
ing on as to who will win the prize.
The cigars, Thurber's Nj. 5, are as
good five cent cigars as can be
bought in the city, without a doubt.
Tnis firm have handled them for a
long time, and they have always
met with a ready aale. Attention

And now a word about tbe Arte

it cannot in any adequate measure
meet tbe demands made upon it by
Northern visitors. Mr. C. Barnes,
tbe proprietor, iuformeu us that if
there were in Albany three other
hotels of the same capacity they Cra|1( | a j p „
would not meat tbe demand made
upon them by persona wishing to
test the curative properties of arte- Reruns of

not wonder that the Artesian
