FRIDAY. MARCH 18. !«**•
Prof. Wifgini, the great weather
prophot, predicts o (rest storm on
the 18tb.
The trouble with the Americee
mrjr, under the Republican admin-
ietration, wee that there were too
many boos-ships in it.
In reference to the report that ex-
President Arthur was to return to
the practice of law, the London
Poet toys: “This is better than
Cincinnatue and hie plough, and
with nothing like the fuse. That
an able and successful solicitor
should make himself active in par
ty politics, and receiving the office
of Yics-Presidsnt as his reward,
should, on the death of his chief,
succeed to the supreme direction
of affairs, has in it little that is sur
prising. Bnt that, having presid
ed over the destinies of 6fty-eeven
millions, be should quietly resume
wpik at bit desk, is a startling turn
of affairs, end possible only in the
United States.”
in the raising of live stock, for
which her soil and climate is so
well adapted, and when that time
shall come we shall see as prosper
ous a class of farmers as can be
found in the worli'.
But Georgia will always remain
a cotton State, and with the im
proved methods of cultivation, im
proved seed, a better staple as well
as a larger yield will make it the
most profitable crop, in connection
with grain and stock, that a farmer
can raise, and Georgia the farmer's
paradise.

While msny so-osllsd “practical”
farmers have sneered st snd derided
the experimental farmer! and new.
papers for advocating improved
methods of farming, the experi
menters snd editors have been get
ting in their work, and the result
of it is seen iu increased yields of
products snd more prosperity, in
•pits of the deeline in prices. Hsd
not this improvement been made,
the cotton planters of the South
would to-day have been in bank
ruptcy. ... . . T’CZEMA. or Sslt Bh.om, with IU Moniitn*

improved methods, it is only neces
sary to state that where in 18C1
880 pounds of lint cotton per acre
wae the yield, we find in 1884 tbe
following yield as reported in s
cotton test: The highest amount
is 1545 pound* of lint cotton from
a single sore; then come 1387,
1321$, 1868,1360,1831,1188,1165,
1115, 1109, 1104,1086,1066; then a
long list in the 908s and another in
tbe 800e still another 700, and all
tbs way down to 438 pounds per
sere, or the smallest amount on
record among the list is more than
double what tbe average yield was
under tbe old-time management.
This sotton was not raised in any
one particular section, but in s
great msny different oonnlies of
tbs Stats, and tbs man who fertili
sed the most obtained the meet
cotton, although the teases was
not at all in their favor in many
cates.
Nor is tbit the greatest result.
Tbe “all cotton” system has been
to persistently attacked that it baa
felt tbs blows snd has weakened to
an extant that was hardly deemed
possible s lew years ago. The im
provement in ootton has been ac-
oempanisd by an even mors marked
improvement in corn, both as to
quaotity planted and the yield. In
acorn test, 116 bushel* per acre
lake* the first prsmium, IOC
8 10 comet second, 103 bushel*
third, quite a showing iu the nine
ties per aoie, several in the eighties,
and down to 48 as the smallest.
Heretofore fifteen bushels per acre
wae ooneidered a good yield, while
tbs average was much belew. it
baa been demonstrated not only
that Georgia fsrmeis can raise
coin, but that it is profitable for
them to do so.
With the corn came the hogs,
snd tbs marked increase in tbe
quantity of home raised meat has
been on* great canee of the pros
perity of oar farmers; for it is gen
erally the case that the farmer who
raises corn snd bogs raises as much
cotton, if not more, se be did when
be bought hie meal and meat.
