off here on their way to the Exp*-

couple of days with their old fel

They are practical farmers end
were very much pleased with the
country around Amerlcus, and we
should not be surprised to see them
make another viait here in a few
months. They represent the win

■and Drill.
This morning, at 10 o'clock, the
Golden silver band will give an
exhibition drill nnder the direction
ofMqjorDotno Franklin. During
the drill the hand will execute a
number of striking and difficult
maneuvres, among which will be
that of kneeling in line while play
ing. The ladies are especially in
vited to be present. The balcony
the Barlow hlock will afford
them a pleasant end convenient
place from which to view the drill.
It is but rarely that this drill is
executed, and Mr. Franklin has
saved it up as an especial treat for
Americus.

A Datay Phvtsn.
Messrs. Oliver A Oliver, the car-
rlage manufacturers, have excelled
even tbemaelvee in the production
of a pba-ton on Dexter Queen
Springs, a piece of carriage archi
tecture that is both novel and hand
some. It is finished in the hand
somest style of the best material,
and is the prettiest, lightest and
easiest running thing on wheels
ever turned outoi any shop, and
reflects not only credit upon the
enterprising manufacturers, but
upon Americus. We cannot ade
quately describe it, for it is some
thing that has to be seen to be ap
preciated. The work was all done
at home, even to the silver plating.
The great objection to phu-tons
heretofore, the necessity of using
low wheels in order to get the body
down, has been done away with in
this, as the wheels are as large as
in an ordinary buggy,, while the
body is as low as in any pha-ton.
By this arrangement all the com
fort of a phieton is secured and
at the same time you caa travel as
easily over all roads, as in any
buggy. This pirn-ton is also lighter
than the old style, as the 'double
back springs are dispensed with.
The motion is also easier than (he
old style plueton, as the weight is
more equally distributed over the
springs. Altogether it is a splendid
achievement in mechanical art, and
we are sorry that our descriptive
powers arc so imperfect that we
cannot better picture its beauty.
It is the first vehicle of the kind
ever turned out in the South, and
is an evidence that Oliver A Oliver
propose to keep in the front of the
procession.
The Street Lights.
Mr. Editor:—We would be glad
to see the gasoline lamps substi
stuted for the kerosene ones. Tbs
light of the gasoline is lar better,
and while the first cost of making
the change <uav be considerable,
yet the breakage of chimneys and
lanterns, the cost of burners and
wicks, would, no doubt, soon over
balance the cost of the change.
Americus needs better street
lamps and her citizens can well
afford to pay a little more if neces
sary to get a better light. We un
derstand that the manufacturers ef
the gasoline lamp claim it to be
cheaper than kerosene. If, so that
is another point in its favor; but
even if it would cost more there are
few citizens, if any, who would feel
the increased taxation or who
would not prefer to pay it and get
the superior lights. We hope the
council committee will be able to
decide in favor of the gasoline.
A Lover of Light.
A New Telegraph Line.
We are mformed that very soon
a telegraph line will bo established
between this city and Preston, and
probably Lumpkin. The matter
is being agitated by a coaple of
welt known business men, who may
erect it by private capital. If they
do not do it, it will be built by a
stock company. A line to the
places mentioned should pay well,
and would be a great convenience
to the people of those counties.
