A great deal of stealing in a small way has been going on in this city some time, and is seems impossible to put a stop to it. When His Honor, Mayor Felder, gets a guilty wretch before him in the council chamber, he gives him a snlli- cient number ol days to remember the act, anil Impress it very sulll- ciently on his mind. It is the same way when a larger case of larceny gets before Judge Pilsbury, hut for all that it seems that the negroes will Bteal. The other day a negro pocketed three plugs cf tobacco at McKenzie’s and was caught out with it. Gene Doughtie was in for giving the fellow a taste of a blacksnake, but no one was around to take care ot the store while he did it, so he had to content him self with making the darkey pay for it, amt firing him out of the s'ore. Not long ago a darkey stole a bottle ol line wine from the same store, hut drank it up before he was caught. Hardly a day passes hut some negro is caught stealing something from a store. How to put a stop to it no one knows. Youthful Ittiscal*. Wcdnesday.two little negro boys, VVelih Solomon and Gene Crowder, ot safety were arrested oy Marshal Lingo and brought before Judge Pilsbury, charged with chicken stealing. streets was referred to street com mittee with authoiity to act. Wheatley A Co , asking the Mayor and Council to appropriate $100 towards defraying expenses of the firemen's tournament, was read, and on motion, granted. Bills read and ordered jraiil. Council adjourned. Another llaru lim ned. Just at midnight, on Tuesday night, the citizens were roused by the fire alarm, and the fire comp* nies hurried to the engine house, but found that llie lire was too far off and under too great headway. It was soon found that Dr. B. C. Black’s barn had been fired, and the building, with four hundred bushels of corn, several stacks of fodder, fanning implements, and a ualf and several goats destroyed. A valuable cow was also burned very badly. After the woodwork had burned away buckets of water were thrown on the burning corn, and fifteen or twenty bushels saved. An investigation ol the orctnises was made by Marshal Lingo, Wednesday, and tracks were found leading oil from the building, through an adjacent field. The tiaeks appeared to be tnose of two persons running, and the supposi tion is that uflcr firing the build ing the incendiaries made their es cape before the fire was discovered. It is to be hoped that the fire fiends may lie captured and summarily dealt with. This is the fourth fire that has occurred within the last few months, all of them being barns, and all ol them fired in an inexplicable manner. It is time that the guilty villains were brought to justice, and not until they are, can ott: citizen sleep with a feeling Aimes AH accounts due ns tro i paid within tf is from-fast year must next fifteen days, nr cats made, other wise they will he placed in the hands of r immediate suit.
