Sl'NDAY. MARCH M. »M.
A civil engineer predicts that the
Washington monument will soon
fall down from its own weight.
Some of the United States Sen
ators are fixing up a jok for a nice
summer excursion at public ex
pense. It is proposed to send a
committee up to Alaska to investi
gate the territorial government. It
would be well to put Sherman on
the committee and give him a
chance to cool off.
Young Democracy seems to have
taken control of the national ad
ministration. To start with, Presi
dent Cleveland is one of the young
est of the Presidents, and he is
surrounding himself with compara
tively young men. With youth
and vigor at the helm, this ought
to be a working administration.
In its regretful mention of Oen.
Grant's fatal illness the New Or
leans Times-Dcmocrat says that
though a fierce adversary, he was
a manly and kindly victor. It
adds: “Twice an hundred thousand
Southern veterans will be grieved
on the day the news will come that
the twice heio of Appomattox has
handed bis trusty sabre to the uni
versal victor.”
The negroes of Lynchburg, Ya.,
have been wrought into a state of
great fear by the report of a news-
bey of that city to the effect that
he had seen a monster—half man
and half dog—running about the
city at night trying to eat small
boys. They cannot be convinced
that the boy is not telling the truth,
as soms of them imagine that they
toe have seen or heard the creature.
In the meantime poultry owners
sleep ssundly.
It has been developed in connec
tion with President Cleveland's
48th birthday, which he celebrated
on Wednesday, that five Presidents
were past CO when first inaugurated.
They were John Adams, Jackson,
Harrison, Taylor and Buchanan.
Twelve of the twenty-two Presi
dents were in the “fifties” when in
augurated. Up to 1845 there had
naver been a President below 5ff
years of age. Since then there
have been five, Polk, Pierce, Grant,
Garfield and Cleveland.
It is said that the Athens factory,
under the management of R. L.
Broomfield as President, hse been
one of the best paying manufac
turing establiahmenta in the South.
Thie' corporation has declared divi
dend* since it started up, averaging
12$ per cent. The operatives are
well paid, are furnished comforta
ble bouses to live in free of rent
and at the (tore connected with the
factory they are charged not ex
ceeding 10 per cent on dry goods
and shoes and supplies at a less
rate. It is believed that this en-
tetprise, which has done Alliens
so much good, has cleared one
quarter of a million dollars since
the war.
Mr. R. II. Davis, of Philadelphia,
who accompanied Col. MoClure, of
the Philadelphia Times, in his late
Southern tour,delivered an address
before the Lehigh University in
Pennsylvania, a few daye alnce, in
which be dwelt at length and with
great force upon the enterprise and
energy of the new South and the
brilliant future before her. The
speaker could not understand what
had kept Northern capital so long
out of the South. He did not be
lieve it was prejudice; it was more
likely ignorance of the South's re
sources, and any fear from a politi
cal point of view was uncalled tor.
“You can,” said he, "travel
throughout the Saiith to-day and
not bear ene word of politics, ex
cept ae politics bear on the im
provement of Southern industries.
The eooner the Northern capitalist
understands thst he can do more
with hie money by Investing it in
the South than in letting it lie idle
in bank* or losing it on Wall
•treat, the better for bim snd the
better for the Sooth. And not only
the capitalist, but the emigrant, tbs
tbriMr, the miner and engineer.”
