N. J. Tailor, ot Lynchburg,
Tenn., ia the first postmaster ap I
pointed under the new administra-1
tion.
Five Oerman artists are in Chat- j
tanooga preparing a grand pano-
rama of the battle of Cbiultamsuga
for a Philadelphia companjr.
There are a great many people
these days who would think more
of the new administration if there
was a livelier distribution of oillct s.
They have been having snow
storms in North Georgia. We
knew it could not be far off, from
the kind of weather we have been
having.
This cold weather will soon oblit
erate all distinctions and sectional
lines between North and South,
and we will soon become one com
mon arctic country'.
The Kmperor o( Germany recent
ly celebrated his eighty-eighth
birthday. It is needless to say
that he presides over a nation
where office-seeking is not a pro-
Icssion practiced by a large pro
portion of the people.
Today is'‘Georgia l>ay” in New
Orleans. We wish Georgia had
something else there besides the
day. We should think the official
of this State would be ashamed to
show themselves in New Orleans
during the Exposition.
We may expect the Arabs to hr
cleaned out now that the English
troops are to be supplied with
American beef. Armour & Co., of
Chicago, have lately received an
order from the English war de
partment for five million cans ol
beet for the army in Egypt, which
Will take 70,000 cattle to till.
The grave and reverend seignors
who compose the Senate of the
United States arc very much wor
ried because the secrets of their
executive sessions are made imme
diately public by the newspapers.
The newspapers are to blame only
for giving undue prominence to
the proceedings to these old mum
mers, thus preventing them from
sinking into the obscurity which
they deserve.
The Washington correspondent
of the New York World says:
“President Cleveland is very much
pleased with Mr. Lamar. There is
no member of the Cabinet who has
more of bis confidence und esteem.
The Mississippi secretary has ex
hibited extraordinary energy and
force ever since he has gone into
the Interior Department. In the
three or four years that he has
been quiet in the Senate he has re
gained hie health and has appar
ently accumulated a vast store t f
reserve energy. He is a much
more valuable man in the Interior
D -partment from the fact that he
is not willing to burden Limstlf
with details. The secretary, who
in this department buries hie nose
too deeply in the papers before him,
his no time for a general survey of
hie department. In his private rc-
litions Mr. Lamar is confiding ar.d
trusting. In his public relations he
is exactly the reverse. As a phi
lotopber and a student he has uc-
4 tired a most profound knowledge
of human character in the common
motives which impel human action.
He has a great gilt for reading the
minds of the people who come
about him. Underneath a manner
of apparent Irankness he mairtsins
a most diplomatic reseive. lie is
the most diplomatic member of the
cabinet. The President said the
other night that Mr. Lamar was
one of the most active members oT
his cabinet a id appeared to lie cs
pable of doing mure woik than any
one of bis associates. The oppo
neat* of Mr. Lamar said that he
VII indolent and that he would not
long carry the burden of the labor
of.the Interior Depaitment. Every
criticism of this kind has been com
pletely disproved. Mr. Lamar noi
only attends to the work of each
bat be finds lime also to die
cues brand, general questions with
the President. lie is at the White
Bonne nearly every evening. The
frieuuS of the President may he
aure that be will make no mistake
